So I had been living off of Safeway Deli sandwiches with the occasional Ike's thrown in there as my daily lunch routine. This all changed once I walked into Guerra's; their sandwiches are very reasonably priced and they also used the freshest meats, contrary to Safeway. I've had a couple friends work for Ike's so I have tried many of their sandwiches, and at a certain point they just become too complex. Guerra's is extremely simple and instead perfects the little aspects rather than overload it with shenanigans. I go for their smoked salmon sandwich, which is amazing since they honestly put like half a pound of salmon on the sandwich. I only see that much salmon from places in Vegas and New York, everyone else is stingy with the salmon, give you like 2 lox. I just tried the Friday special sandwich: herb crusted pork with au jus, on dutch crunch with lettuce and onions, and it was amazing. I can't wait to try their Zinfandel steak sandwich on Tuesdays!

The guys (and girls) here are just plain great. They remember you after like 2 visits, they are quick to serve, and happy to suggest. The prices are always fair and well worth the trek over. Their fish selection can be a bit variable, just as a heads up. If you are having a sandwich craving, head on over - they make a mean shaved turkey, and an awesome roast beef. Though they seem to have lost sweet french rolls somewhere in the last 2 years... Ce la vie... Oh, and don't forget to treat yourself to one of their deviled eggs for the road - awesome.

Love this place. Seems weird that they have a ton of 5 stars, and then a few 1 stars - as I've had nothing but great service here, whether I was sick or healthy, on a phone or not, of an ethnicity that one may like or not like, in a hurry or not. It's just a great, great place with fresh, reasonably priced meat, a wonderful "order online" "we'll cook it for you" delicious pick up dinner, and I would never DREAM of buying my holiday turkeys or meats anywhere else. Obviously the 5 star reviews speak for themselves... It couldn't be any, any better than Guerras. Love this place!

though i love the idea of a independent butcher, i must say i was let down by the meat quality. ive given it a shot a few times over and just wasnt happy with the quality of the cuts. ive gotten a couple two inch thick bonein ribeyes. it was great that they will cut it up for you right there, but the meat lacked a certain ummmph. tried a standing bonein ribeye roast, again lacked the ummph. tried several others, and always lacked the good beefy taste. i was sad that i couldnt like this place. i really wanted to. local, independent, we need to support these places, but damn, i just cant find myself paying a premium for standard meat.

Places like Guerra are the reason I love living in San Francisco. Great selection, locally owned, quality products and helpful service. I love coming home with little paper-wrapped packages of fresh meat.... much more satisfying than plastic-wrapped styrofoam!

nice shop. especially like that it is right on the L-Taraval line, so it's real easy to get to from the other side of the city. the butchers were helpful and pleasant. i got an entire leg of lamb (!) for my birthday bbq and they sliced it up into kebab-sized chunks for me, no extra charge. meat selection is good, i suppose. nothing too exotic, but a wide selection of cuts of your standards.

My quest for a good Italian sandwich - outside of Italy - successfully ended here today. Ciabatta with Mortadella. The lady asked "what would you like on it?". Nothing, obviously, you don't want to alter the flavor of a good mortadella sandwich. Perfect, I was back home for the 5 minutes it took to eat it. For the rest, just walking around the store, I got an excellent impression of the different meats on display, and of the few dry products on the shelves. Will come back to try their t-bone soon.

Whipped mayonaise ? I hope so, because for some reason it always tastes so good on the sandwiches here. 4 stars for local charm as well.

John and Paul Guerra use to be real close to home before they moved from West Portal to the Taraval corner (over 20 years ago). My favorites are the home-made spaghetti meat sauce (half pint or full pint). During the holidays, may it be for Easter (Ham), St. Patrick's (Corn Beef), Thanksgiving (their Goose and Turkey can be roasted half way and you do the rest), and/or Christmas. The meat purveyer is Harris' Niman Ranch. They also deliver to your home if you order in advance.

Very good butcher, small place but lots of selection and good service. Reminds you why San Francisco is such a great place with wonderful local businesses.

A damn good sandwich and really good potato salad, too. I can see how it might get really crowded in the store (it was when we were there, and there really weren't even that many people inside.) Since it was a cold and rainy day, i really appreciated how there were 2 kids holding the door open and licking it the whole time I was in line, both freezing me and grossing me out a the same time -- ick, it's flu season!

As one of the few natives here I can tell you that I have sampled it all, and Guerra's ranks in my top 3 of deli's in the city. The service is always friendly, the food is always fresh, and the location is perfect for a Sunday trip to the beach. Just order a couple of Sicilians, couple pop's, chips, maybe some olive ensalate, with some fresh bread, and drive, or bike, or walk down to da beach. Beautiful old San Francisco ritual. I also have the same last name, and they treat me like "family", so maybe I'm a little biased. Who cares, just eat there will ya.

okay, the meat. it was good. the sandwich was awesome. the macaroni salad was molti bueno. but. why was it that my black friend got more meat in his sandwich than his half-asian/half white counterpart? okay. thats a bad complaint. but I felt that such perfection needed to be dented a little. bc as a Drag Queen once said on Jerry Springer, 'nothing this good can be real anyways.' don't ask about the reference.

For some reason, the course readers for two of my classes this semester were only available at Dragon Printing on Taraval, not at the bookstore. Slightly inconvenient, since I live nowhere near the place. However, the sandwich I bought at Guerra's on the way home more than made up for the detour. I got the sicilian, and it was delicious- not to mention spicy. I think I'll be going out of my way more often.

With a husband who only eats seafood as his source of animal protein, buying fresh seafood all the time gets expensive. I've tried Trader Joe's, but after experiencing fish that was often bad or nearly so, by the time I got it home, I vowed never to buy fresh fish there again. Safeway is hit or miss, usually miss. Andronico's costs an arm and a leg for a fillet of fish. Guerra's on the other hand, has great meat and seafood: really fresh and reasonably priced. For example, recently, I purchased wild salmon at Guerra's for $12.99/lb. Andronico's price for wild salmon was $24.99/lb.! There's always a bunch of friendly guys behind the counter, waiting to help you. Plus, it's in my neighborhood, and now they're open Sundays, what more can I ask for?

Good meatloaf sandwich. Tasty bread, well-balanced ketchup, perfectly cromulent (sic?) cheese, and the meatloaf was loafy in that meat kinda way.

  • Mike W.

Great place to buy very fine meat and sandwiches. I've been shopping here with family since 1990s. They have these super cheap monster cooked Turkey legs that are to die for. Overall their steaks blow Safeway down the street out of the water, quality is bar non best. I love this place.

    (4)
  • Wes M.

The Inner Sunset has everything...except a butcher. Andronico's selection is only so-so, and while you can head to Outer Irving, good luck trying to find lamb...or labels of any kind. So despite no longer living in West Portal, I still find myself drawn back to Guerra's occasionally. I mean, it's still a heck of a lot closer than Drewes Brothers or the Ferry Building. Only problem is I take a look at those 5-lb corned beef briskets and start daydreaming about Full Irish Dinner. If only I still ate meat. And oh yeah, you can grab a mean sandwich here as well.

    (5)
  • Dicky D.

Next time you find yourself at Safeway mulling over whether you want the grey or brown cut of beef, do yourself a favor and go to Guerra's. The service might be a little on the surly side, but the selection is outstanding and the prices are highly competitive.

    (5)
  • Janice P.

Yeah, they have great meat and seafood, too, But try their ravioli, too. Best quality meats and great staff. Ask for Matt.

  • Annie G.

Guerra's is by far the best butcher shop in the city...possibly in the world. If you're not drooling over the fine cuts of meat and other delicious products--either house-made or straight from Italia--you should be drooling over the extra fine cut of meat behind the deli on weekday mornings cause she's SMOKIN' ASS HOT! and so is her dad and uncle.

  • Rachel B.

I never want to buy meat anywhere else. A whole, organic, fresh (not frozen) chicken was $1.99/lb. Not sure how that compares to other stores, but now you know.

  • L. M.

I used to live down the street from this deli... and you know how it is... you don't appreciate a good thing until you move across town, and they tear down the central freeway, and it becomes a nightmare to drive south on 19th to get to Taraval. This is a great deli -- fresh meats, fresh breads, a great selection of cheeses and salads, and the REAL reason to go to this place: great service. I always get a black forest ham and provolone sandwich on Dutch crunch. And since their Dutch crunch comes in big, long loafs (like French bread) sometimes I also like to buy one to make sandwiches at home. (See my Arizmendi review if you're wondering if I have a bread fetish...) And sometimes I just stop in to get a few deviled eggs and munch them in my car like a crack addict getting her fix.

  • tessie n.

meat quality and service is top notch. i drive across town to come here to pick up racks of lamb and rib roasts. and the best part, they don't even blink when you go there to pick up sweatbreads or tripe to make your own culinary masterpieces at home!

They make really good sandwiches, and the stuffed deviled eggs are awesome! The people that work there are very friendly ,and everything is very quality.

I love this place. It's a little pricey - yes, but when I need quality meat/fish/salame this is where I go. I love that they are family owned - there is one location, they are really knowledgeable and are able to special order products. And their sandwiches are $5....what? yes, people - this place rocks!

The 15 nicest people on planet Earth were discovered and they all decided, simultaneously, to work at Guerra's. I have a big family and this place has provided me with something excellent to cook for dinner every night ever since I discovered it a few years ago. The_level_ of service you get here makes you want to drop by even if you don't need anything for dinner. Walking in the door is the same feeling Norm must've felt on the TV show "Cheers," everybody truly does know your name. The presentation of the meats, deli foods and cheeses is tremendous. You can order anything from their website, even custom made sandwiches, pay for it online and pick it up at the store in the afternoon. They'll have your order all wrapped up with your name on it and you can grab it and walk out the door immediately, they've already put your receipt in the bag. At Guerra's it's 'anything your heart desires.' How can you beat that?

  • Erica B.

I'm practically obsessed with Guerra's. It boasts a friendly and knowledgeable staff, quality products (meat as well as deli fare and other delectable sundries), and a location both easily accessible by public transportation and with tons of parking nearby. I consider Guerra's an essential stop if I'm having a barbecue or dinner party or if I'm craving an amazing sandwich. Also, Guerra's has a website now ( guerrameats.com ) complete with recipe ideas, proving that these butchers not only know their cuts of meat, they know their way around a kitchen as well. Love them.

  • M.M. S.

outstanding in every way. excellent meats, great marinades, terrific sandwiches. Puts whole foods to shame. Best butcher in the city by far. It will be sad when/if we move away from West Portal. It'd hard to find a nice butcher.

  • Phil M.

Guerra's is one of the last independent butchers in SF, and if I ate meat that might mean a whole lot more to me... But, I don't. So, I will comment on my experience with their shrimp sandwiches. They're great! I'm amazed at the old school professionalism of the staff here. I feel productive just standing and waiting for my sandwich. We need more family owned joints like this and as mentioned by Erica B., they are also online at guerrameats.com .

Excellent customer service, the staff really knows their meats and all of the other products. The best sandwiches in town, too! A great neighborhood butcher shop. An absolute must try, we have been buying our meats their for the last 10 years and never once was disappointed.

Love guerra's EXCEPT, no numbering system for customers!! You end of having to wait a long time, uncomfortably as the CUSTOMERS (not Guerras) figures out who goes next. Produce is overpriced too. All that said, still the best butcher around and I would give them 4/5 stars if they just got the 'waiting on line' thing together.

  • Kent F.

Guerras is by far my favorite butcher in the neighborhood. The quality of the meat is excellent, but even more importantly the guys are legit butchers that know their craft.

An old fashioned butcher shop. The meat is high quality. The selection is good. The staff is friendly. I think we'd have to go more often for them to recognize us as regulars. I recommend them over Andronico's or Safeway. Prices are competitive/fair.

This is my go to place for meat and other great food for parties and other special occasions! Everything I have tried from here is amazing, but the Zinfandel Tri Tip and the red potato salad are particularly delicious!

**I don't usually like to spread any sort of non-positive energy, but this is a really important issue that I wanted to bring to light** I have loved the taste of Guerra's basic, over-priced sandwiches, that they occasionally mess up, but still usually make quality. More than once while ordering sandwiches for multiple people, they have included tomato when I asked for none or didn't put any mayo when I asked for "extra"... But something that REALLY bothers me about this place: customer service. Most of the time, I am given attitude by the all-men staff that seem to work there... But my last experience takes the CAKE: ... I was ordering two sandwiches a while back. BOTH egg salad. BOTH on dutch crunch. BOTH with the works, except 1 with no tomato. I even gave the boy a written list of the sandwich specs... The boy behind the counter was having trouble getting the order right (for some strange reason) and kept saying he was sorry about putting tomatoes on both of the sandwiches after I had repeatedly asked, and even written down, for 1 with "no tomatoes". Feeling bad for him, I jokingly said "No worries, I guess I like to make things a little difficult...", trying to alleviate the little issue... At that point, his much older coworker interrupted our conversation and looked at me, while saying, "You know why you like to make things difficult?" I didn't know what he was talking about, so I shook my head, to which he retorted "Because you're a WOMAN, that's why!" With a massive, satisfied smile on his face, he walked away. At first, stunned, I stared mouth agape at the BLATANT SEXISM that just came out of the rude man's mouth. I don't know where the older man gets off thinking he can talk to women, or even customers like that... Then, I realized the hilarity at the fact that the sandwich his coworker was messing up on wasn't even mine, but my BOYFRIENDS... who wrote the original sandwich specs down in the first place. So I'm pretty sure the fact that I am a woman has NOTHING to do with the fact that his coworker doesn't know how to make a simple egg salad sando... I WILL NEVER GO INTO THIS PLACE AGAIN (who cares if I liked your egg salad!) and I ALWAYS tell people about what happened whenever someone mentions this average deli! Time to start supporting the intelligent & socially AWARE businesses in San Francisco instead!!

Came in here on a Wednesday at 4 pm. When I arrived I was the only customer there but about five minutes in the place swarmed with people. I was relieved to note the adequate staffing. There were multiple people to help customers with but like another yelper mentioned they DO NOT have a number system which makes things kind of awkward and confusing when it is crowded. I got a fresh salmon filet, a pound of bacon, and the dry rub hanger steak. Steak and bacon were decent priced, salmon was expensive. Overall everything was tasty and of great quality. Sure, you COULD go to Safeway down the street and get $3 steak but...you would be eating a $3 steak from Safeway... Will definitely come back to this place.

Funny how I used to live in this neighborhood and never gave this place a shot...my loss. Now I live on the other side of town I have discovered both Parkside Farmers Market and now Guerra Quality meats. Both of which are really good places to find quality products and very good prices. Guerra is a traditional butcher shop that has been providing quality meats to the inner sunset for many many years. They carry my favorite poultry: Mary's chickens and turkeys...and their prices are a few dollars per pound cheaper than Antonelli's over in presidio heights (gee that's a big surprise). Guerra also has grass fed beef which is of very high quality and taste. They also have great pork ribs, an amazing selection of sausages (um sausages...yum) , and a nice selection of fish. I have not had their deli items...but from the looks of what people were getting their sandwiches are Killer. I also love the fact that this is a pure butcher shop...not a shop within a shop.....all these guys do is meats.....That is Awesome. Fire up the grills and visit Guerra !!!

  • Tina L.

Everything here is really fresh. I really like the chicken salad sandwich and the ravioli. Only downside is that everything is cold, so you have to toast your own sandwich and heat up the ravioli before eating it.

    (4)
  • Norman V.

Go to this old school Italian butcher/deli shop if only for the crab cakes. Made daily, they are hands down the best anywhere in San Francisco. I eat crab cakes wherever I go. Guerra's are plump cakes with big pieces of crab meat, without the usual fillers. If you think you know crab cakes, this will likely surpass what you know. I could go on about the high quality inventory throughout the store and excellent daily dinner entrees and made to orders dishes to go but just start with the crab cakes and you will get the idea.

THANK YOU, GUERRA QUALITY MEATS! YOU GUYS ARE A LIFESAVER! Originally, I placed an order for a rib roast with San Francisco Meats & Delicatessen (Ocean Ave). However on Friday, 11.11.11, the day of my scheduled pick-up, I found that they were CLOSED! A rib roast is not something that can be found just anywhere and sometimes requires a pre-order. After having a mini panic attack, I composed myself, and referred to my Yelp App (where would we be without this?). I was cooking for friends that night and did not want to change the menu so I was DETERMINED to find a rib roast. I saw Guerra Quality Meats come up on my top searches and with a 4.5 STAR rating, I decided to call them first. I called and they said they had a rib roast in stock! WHOOO HOOOO! I was both relieved and elated... I drove straight there from San Francisco Meats & Delicatessen and was pleasantly surprised to see that Guerra Quality Meats was a mini-market (fruits, veggies, herbs, cheeses, bread, pasta, desserts), an Italian deli (made-to-order sandwiches) and a meat shop (beef, pork, lamb, veal, poultry and fish): a ONE STOP SHOP! Everything was fresh and vibrant in color. I went to the butcher counter and asked for a 2 Rib Roast which was about 5 pounds. It was just $10.99/lb which was less than what I was quoted from San Francisco Meats & Delicatessen at $12.99-$14.99/lb. I planned on going to Andronico's for bone marrow but thought I ask if they had it in stock and they did! The butcher went to the back and showed me what they had. After I ok'd it, he sliced it in halves for me. It was $1.99/lb which was cheaper than Andronico's at $2.99/lb. I told the butcher, it was my first time cooking prime rib and he kindly wrote the instructions on the package: 1. Set the oven to 500 degrees for 15 minutes 2. Lower the oven to 350 degrees and bake the rib roast for 1.25-1.5 hours for medium rare After pre-heating the oven that night, I put the rib roast in the oven and crossed my fingers that it would come out ok. yelp.com/biz_photos/jK1_… The essence of garlic and thyme permeated in the air causing one of my friends to keep looking into the oven (Grrrr, I seriously wanted to spank his hand every time he did that). 1.25 hours later, the roast was FINITO! yelp.com/biz_photos/jK1_… The roasted bone marrows turned out just as well with just 15 minutes in a 450 degree oven. yelp.com/biz_photos/jK1_… A home-cooked meal with my friends went off without a hitch that night and I have Guerra Quality Meats to thank! Not only did they save my night, they also saved us money. GUERRA QUALITY MEATS, YOU GUYS ROCK!

This is a great butcher shop! They have really high quality meats. They are really nice too and its a family run business. I've never been disappointed with their meats. I think this is a go to place for me when I'm in San Francisco and want to buy meat for a family dinner. They are very helpful here and its just a great shop. I highly recommend it. Editing to add a personal note: I went to grammar school with one of the Guerra family members. He may or may not remember me but I remember everyone from that school and he was one of the nice kids. Also, when visiting my mom, I have eaten some really delicious italian sausages from this shop! I'm not even that into meat but they were so yummy!

  • John S.

My review is of the beef they sell. It is just about the same as I have gotten in the supermarket except about twice the price including their steaks. Buy steak at the supermarket when it looks good and spend the money you save on a good bottle of wine! Oh yeah, forgot to mention, they are less than appreciative of the business they receive.

  • Edr T.

I tried this place a few times, but every time I ask for meat to be cut in certain way the butcher don 't listen and cut the way he feels like it. All I asked was to cut the chicken into 4 pieces, remove skin and put the 4 pieces into 4 bags, yet he simply gave me attitude and mess up my order. Also, This place is over priced yet they don't give you the service you came here for. I went there 6 times giving them benefits of doubt yet they mess up all 6 times.

Pros - generous size sandwiches with choice of bread and condiments. Ample help behind the counter. I got the Milano and the shrimp salad sandwiches. I would order either one again. Sandwiches are made upon ordering. Decent price. I like how each sandwich is wrapped in white butcher paper as this is half butcher shop and half deli shop. Cons - if you order online before 1 pm, your order is ready at 4pm per the website. Does that apply to sandwiches too? What's the point? I placed my order online for my two sandwiches at 9:15am. Dropped into the shop at 10am. They had printed the order off but not processed yet. I was advised it's better to place your sandwich order over the phone for pick up and quicker service as they only check the online system every hour or so.

Review for Prime Rib Roast: I ordered a 4 lb prime rib roast online @ 10.99 per pound. I was quoted $43.96 + taxes. I later found out I got charged a few dollars more than 4 lbs. When I picked up my order, I noticed the meat was about 4.5 lbs. Apparently, when they cut the meat, it's not the exact 4 lb as I requested online. The charges did surprised me but it's no biggie. It didn't advertise or say anywhere online about this. It would be nice if there was an *asterisk next to it, saying 'not guaranteed to be the exact pounds,' etc., something like that would help the customers. Brought the meat home and cooked it as a birthday dinner for my boyfriend. It was a nice pretty looking piece of meat! Red meat with lots of fat. (See Pic) Just my kind of prime rib. I put the same marinade, as how I have been in the past, and as we ate it, it didn't taste that great. It was just OK. I've always had the prime rib roast from Safeway and for some reason, Safeway is way better the Guerra Quality meats. Thought Guerra will be better but guessed wrong. Next time, to save a few dollars, I will go to Safeway.

  • D C.

I have shopped here a number of times over the past few years. I like their mild Italian sausage and their bacon but their steaks are not as good as the Safeway Open Nature brand and are more expensive, especially as Safeway often has the meat on sale for $11.99/lb. I bought some lamb chops a few weeks ago and they were fatty and gamey tasting, not nearly as good as the chops I buy at Costco. My biggest gripe is with the lack of a number system so customers can queue up and be served in order. The men who work there wait on the people they know over people who have been patiently waiting for service. Very frustrating. The attitudes of some of the guys who work there is off putting. There is a young Asian man who works there who is rude and condescending. He takes every opportunity to be sarcastic and is generally smart-mouthed not helpful. I like to give my business to small "mom and pop" stores like Guerra, but I don't think I will be rushing back there anytime soon. When I buy meats at Andronico's, they are happy for my business. They will vacuum seal the meat on request so it can go right into the freezer. Mr Guerra, there are lots of other places to go to buy high quality meat. I hope you can reign in the bad attitudes of some of your employees or I think your business will suffer.

Delicious sandwiches, a huge variety of meats, all at good prices, AND a good selection of produce, beverages, and beer. They're nice people too.

I would give this place a 3.5 stars. We went here for lunch and ordered their Tuesday special sandwich which was the zinfandel tri-tip. I think the sandwiches are good but the tri-tip was just OK. However, the sandwiches were well made and they used really good mustard which I wholeheartedly approved. I would like to come back and try the other specialty sandwiches with cured meats. We also picked up some short ribs while we were there. I wasn't very happy with it because they were so expensive compares to the supermarkets but I didn't feel the quality was any better. The service was awesome, by the way. Everyone was very nice, courteous, and caring towards all of the customers. How the ordering line and the purchasing line work was very confusing. There were no clear indication where we should order and pay. Oh well. Will come back to try the other sandwiches and update my review.

Stopped here to grab a sandwich on my way to the beach and was impressed with the entire operation. It would be a culinary dream to come here every day and buy fresh products to make dinner. Even their pre-prepared selections looked awesome. I especially appreciate how fresh and clean everything was. An essential in a butcher but not always the case.

Their variety of meats is impressive, you can really taste the quality in the food they serve. They also have a good selection of pre-made salads, tamales, meatballs, and such you can order. Some of my friends love their deviled eggs, I love their shrimp salad. The prices are a little pricey ($11.99/lb for the shrimp salad) but still soo good. I always get their prosciutto sandwich and am totally obsessed. The staff is friendly and I can see why my friends have made this deli a regular lunch spot.

This is my neighborhood bacon dealer. They are right around the corner from me - whenever I need a slab of bacon, I stop on by. They are always willing to serve! They also have tasty marinaded meats, ready for the oven. My lazy side loves this, especially right after work or on a sunday afternoon. yay Guerras!

I come here to buy meat. Have yet to try their sandwiches. Easy to find parking here. Wait isn't that long. You can get Marin Sun Farms meat or other brands that are organic/pasture raised/ grassfed. Well-priced. One of my go to places.

I live nearby but that doesn't matter. I drove by this place for years before I finally bought some meat there. Once I did I was totally impressed. I'm a bit of a cook now after some years of practice and when I think of quality meat this is the place I go. When you think of traditional butchers who don't just sell you the meat but help you choose it and advise you on how to cook it, this is one of those places. Add to that the high quality of meat they sell and you have a winner, but it doesn't stop there. They make awesome sandwiches. I took another few years before I tried one. (don't ask). I'm a fan. I could eat meat sandwiches every day if I had the choice. (but I don't). Awesome place hands down.

Been coming to Guerra Quality Meats for years and for some reason I never Yelped it. Perhaps it was my little cooking secret. The only times I really come here is to purchase veal or beef. Unlike commercial grocery stores that sell grain fed cows, Guerra Quality Meats sell beef that come from grass fed cows. The taste is a bit more iron-y and is different from grain fed cows. I prefer this more than the commercial grocery store beef. Healthier and very old school farmer like. It is difficult to find rib roast or filet mignon cuts at a local grocery store in the meats dept. Even Costco is sort of hit and miss or you have to order it during the holiday season. This place ALWAYS have what I need when I am in a pinch and when I am cooking for a family of 10-12 people. Price: Cuts of grass fed beef, veal and seafood are reasonably priced and affordable. Customer Service: Friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful when I called over the phone. There is always someone there who smiles. Overall: I think I come here WAY too much when I am in San Francisco.

This place is tucked neatly above 19th Street on Taraval, so don't be fooled by it's quaint appearance. This place has it all to prepare a meal, from it's extensive variety of meats to Semifreddi's loaves of bread. If you're looking for friendly service, quality and freshness, this butcher shop is the place to go. I come here for everything from ground lamb to hangar steak to snapper fillets. Their variety of meats are immaculately displayed behind the counter, and it is weighed to order, then wrapped in thick waxed paper. You can asked them to split your bone-in chicken breasts or cut your pork shoulder into stew bits, both huge time savers for me when I get to my kitchen. A classic butcher shop experience. They have a huge variety of Italian imported goods. I buy imported canned tomatoes from Italy here, which are less sweet and more flavorful than American brands. They even have a fresh produce section for your convenience if you forget that vegetable staple for your recipe at the grocery. Lastly, if you're looking for a quick lunch, they also have a prepared foods counter that also serves everything from potato salad to cole slaw to made-to-order sandwiches. My personal favorite is their turkey sandwich on dutch crunch. They roast their own turkey so moist and flavorful and the dutch crunch bread provides the perfect chewy crunch contrast. Stop by here for a full lunch before headed to the Stern Grove Concerts. You will be the envy of your fellow picnicking neighbors.

Hadn't been to Guerra in some time, but I was very glad I stopped in last week for a St. Pat's corned beef. It was delicious, much less salinated than one of those pre-packaged Safeway type ones, and they actually had a few different cuts to choose from. They gave me a unique spice mix to cook the corned beef with, and roasted in the oven along with a can of Guinness....wow! Also bought a couple of pork chops and they were so fresh and tasty....it made me realize that what I suspected is true - the quality of meat at Andronico's has really gone down hill. Bummer, as Andronico's is more convenient for me, but Guerra is absolutely worth a bit of a journey. Just knocking off a star for the somewhat gruff service, and a couple of my friends report that they have been put off by the unfriendliness at Guerra on more than one occasion. That's not good.

I honestly cannot tell you about the pricing here since my parents live in the neighborhood and always purchase the meats. But I have been eating meat from here for years and it's always top notch quality. This includes steaks, lamb chops an prime rib. I recently are a catered prime rib from here and it was phenomenal. I'm not even a prime rib fan, but I was grabbing seconds and packed myself some to go. We will always be frequent customers as long as these guys are around.

Seriously? I don't get it. They do have meats you may not find in place like Safeway but next time buy a common meat from here then go to Safeway down the street. For most of you who can afford this place will not change your mind but do your self a favor and compare. For most part, service is ok - but there are few fellas there with "smart ass" attitude.

(See pics) Review #1118. This shop carries good quality meat. It shines through from cooking and being able to taste the difference. You can trust the perfect cut with the skin on which helps make the meat rich, complex and flavorful. The meats were bright red. The location is perfectly located just a couple blocks from San Francisco Wine Trading Company. Go get a $10 wine tasting on a Saturday and walk up here to pick up the perfect meat for making a wonderful dinner. So far I have tried the rack of lamb, New York steak and steak filet and all came out as very good dishes. Some of the poultry is hormone free, no antibiotics, while others are free range. Something that is very helpful if you are health conscious.

Oh, Yelp! How you have lead me to some amazing places and this was no exception. I was at the Farmer's Market and wanted to make a special meal with all the fresh produce I had just bought, so I pulled out my phone and asked the magician of Yelp what was near. Lo and behold, I was directed to Guerra's. When I walked in, I was greeted with a small, but well appointed shop with tiny aisles (not my favorite, but a common sight in SF where land is at a premium). I wandered around happy as can be as I had finally found my replacement for Bay Cities in Santa Monica. Here they had the specialty Italian items along with fresh meats and a helpful crew who will recommend cuts of meats that will be just as effective in your dish, but save you a few bucks. On subsequent visits, they have been kind enough to freshly grind chicken thighs for me and have specially cut meat for what I wanted. Finally, don't skip on the sandwiches. They are perfect for lunch or a nice picnic for the beach along with some of their farfalle with peas, sun dried tomatoes, and pesto. It is my go to meat shop and I will brave 19th Avenue to go here on a regular basis.

I love Guerra's! Everyone is SUPER nice and friendly! It's a small neighborhood deli, and it's sad that not that many people know about it or choose to go to Safeway instead. The sandwiches are really reasonably priced and super fresh and delicious! Highly recommend the daily specials, Friday is roasted pork? I believe? It's really well made with generous portions of fresh pork. TRY it, you won't be disappointed!

QUESTIONABLE PRICING. Look, it's nice to have that feel of a local butchery. However, their pricing is suspect. I just picked up my Fresh Diestel turkey from them yesterday. Their online pricing is $2.99 per pound. This bird was 9.75 lbs. The price they rang me up for? A whopping $43.00. For a TEN pound bird? This was $10.00 OVER what I should have paid according to their advertised pricing. I should have questioned the charge, and am remiss I did not do so in the hustle and bustle of a long line of customers waiting for their own (mis-priced?) turkeys. This is shady pricing practices to me. Watch your pocketbook, and make SURE they quote you in person the correct prices they advertise on the web. Another con? They don't itemize receipts. More shady dealing. PS: This turkey was supposed to be fresh. Opened it today and the inside was frozen. Shame of Guerra's for using their "good" reputation to overcharge customers.

Another in my series of West Portal-area reviews... I will give this place the very highest praise I can think of, which is: this is the closest I've come to experiencing the magic that is Iavarone Bros. Italian butcher in Maspeth, Queens, since I've moved to San Francisco. If only they carried Italian 3-layer cookies and Boar's Head cold cuts, this might be nirvana.

I went here for the sandwich. It was of great quality meat, tasty, and a very decent sandwich. Although it tasted very decent I was definitely expecting more for the price. I would shop for their grocery. They have a great selection of meat over there. Makes me want to pull the grill out on a cold day.

We love this place for picking up a picnic lunch before heading out to explore the city's nature (beaches, hikes, parks, etc). We (boyfriend and I) typically split the egg salad sandwich, a bag of chips, and a pint of one of their prepped salads or pastas. The sandwich is so good (and vegetarian!), the price is great, and it's convenient. Also, the service is always friendly and helpful. The layout is a little choppy, so it is easy for Guerra's to feel packed with people, but it's certainly not a deal breaker.

I've grown tired of "outside food" and took an interest in cooking. I'm by no means the next Gordon Ramsey or even a "Kitchen Chef" but cooking has peaked my interest and its my latest craze. Guerra Quality meats is definitely a great place to pick up USDA Choice beef. Although I feel that the Yelp rating of 1 $ is misleading I think its fair to say its more on the 2 $$ rage. The butcher was somewhat friendly and but very efficient. I waited less than a minute before he asked me what I needed. I picked up a couple pounds of flank steak as well as a pound of spicy Italian sausage about $20 total. Both were a hit with my family. The flank steak grilled up nicely. I saute the sausage with challots and deglazed the pan with white wine and finished it with heavy cream. Served over pasta it almost took the thunder away from the flank steak and lobsters I picked up from New England Lobster Co. Its about 15 minutes away from where I live and I would certainly return for the meats. The $5.99 Ranchers Reserve from Safeway doesn't come close to the USDA Choice that's available at Guerra Quality Meats. You'll pay $4 more per pound but think of it as quality vs quantity. Enjoy!

Armed with my Groupon coupon, I came in here to purchase some items for a dinner party. The chicken breasts are organic and free range and HUGE. I told the butcher what I intended to do with them and he offered to butterfly them and pound them thin for me. I told him that just splitting them would be fine but he insisted doing it all for me. I'm so happy he did! The slices were perfectly even in size, shape and thickness! This was perfect for ensuring even cooking times and for providing beautifully sliced chicken breasts to my guests (I was having a Food Network moment...it's all about presentation!). I also ordered the Toscano sandwich, one of their Italian sandwich combos. Filled with salami, coppa and veggies, this sandwich hit the spot....for two meals. Service was great! From what I could observe the staff was helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. There seemed to be a lot of regulars while I was there. I hadn't been to Guerras in a while and the coupon brought me back in. I'm so happy that I did. The prices are high, but quality of the products is high and the services of their butchers are at your disposal. I'll be back for sure.

This is my only 5 star review to date. I would not change one single thing about Guerra Meats. Great selection, attentive service and neighborhood feel, knowledgeable butchers who can give cooking tips, wonderful prepared foods (I am particularly fond of the egg salad and farro salad), fantastic pre-marinated meats and fish, small but carefully chosen dairy and produce, excellent local bread and sweets, and a curated selection of imported foods. Saving the best for last- they have a new fabulous offer of some freshly prepared entree at the end of every weekday that you can pick up for dinner. It's home cooked food- yesterday was shepherd's pie for $7.99 a pound, and my 3 picky eaters devoured every scrap. This is a lifesaver for a working mom! I heart Guerra Meats!

parking right in front. or around the side, should be fairly easy. great butcher shop and deli. friendly helpful go out of their way to answer your question type of people. i went here for some corned beef. oops, none. there doesn't seem to be a deli that carries corned beef sliced for me...well, not close by. i'm going crazy looking for it. I guess i'll have to drive downtown to find it. They sell sandwiches. they cut meat. they even tell you how to cook it. they even marinate different meat for you.

Try their garlic chicken sausage. It is ace. As for their sandwiches... You'll get a ton of meat, and I'm sure it's quality stuff. See, thing is, I'm a carb fiend. So, I'm not the best critic of meat, but I will make faces if you give me American "French" bread. And while Guerra did not give me American "French" bread, I kind of wish they had, because what I did get was the toughest bread I've ever had the displeasure of trying to eat. I also had a dutch crunch that was seriously missing the crunch. I will give you your extra star, Guerra, when you find me a dutch crunch that does not feel like you've been storing it in a particularly damp patch of fog for the last three days OR a french bread that does not put me in fear of drawing blood. (This from someone who usually breaks crab legs open with her teeth.)

This place is awesome. I ordered an 60lb whole hog for a pig roast from guerra. The price was good but make sure you give them a weeks notice if you are ordering an entire pig. The staff was super friendly and even loaded the pig into our car. I love that they open at 9am on Sundays. This let us pick up the pig on the day of the roast and finish cooking early enough for dinner.

I stopped in here after avoiding safeway when I was housesitting in the hood. It made me sad to not be in SF more. Everything is good, it's reasonably priced, and the butchers know their meat well. It's as good as the British butchers I use in London, which is saying a LOT. If they had haggis, they'd be perfect.

  • Rosa T.

I REALLY like this place. It's a little small and gets crowded easily. Customers are on the honor system here! Whether ordering a sandwich or asking for a cut of meat there is no number system so the butchers call out "next". Can seem a little chaotic, but so far haven't had anyone cut in front of me. They have a small selection of grocery items such as Sonoma cheese, fresh herbs, pastas and desserts. Been there a couple of times for Sukiyaki meat and that's something they don't carry, but they've suggested a cut that works and slice the meat finely for me. I've had the veggie, shrimp salad and chicken salad sandwiches, All very good! My husband loves their meatball sandwich and my friend enjoyed the snapper special sandwich. Overall, great place for meat and sandwiches!

This is the best place in the Sunset to get good quality meats for a price. Prices are more expensive than Chinese markets and Safeway which is just down the block, but one is really paying for what they are getting here. They have everything from the American Kobe Beef to Turkeys.

I started coming here about 6 months ago and haven't been disappointed yet. Last night I made a lamb stew with meat-bone in and bacon from this place. The bacon was thick cut and delicious. I could not resist eating half of one before crumbling the rest for my stew. The lamb came out very tender after an hour of half of simmering. People tell me it's pricey but I don't see much of a difference. I don't really drink or smoke cigarettes or do much of anything else "fun" so food has become my biggest vice. If knitting, writing, and eating have become my 3 favorite pastimes, I'm comfortable in that knowledge.

After discovering Guerra's early this year, Guerra's has been my go to place for bbq meats, deli meats, special occasions, and my baby's meat supply. However, after today's service, Guerra's has lost a long term customer. Today I ordered 1 lb of ground veal and asked to have it separated into 4 packages . The butcher's reponse was, "All you need to do is to divide it into 4 patties. It will take 2 minutes. How hard is that?" I was a bit taken aback when I heard his response and thought maybe I misheard him. However, he returned with a single package. I then informed him that he is the first butcher there who would not do that for me. His response was, "well I am the owner and I will not do that." If I was not in a hurry and my 17 mo old was not hungry, I would have left without the meat. If that is the kind of service the owner is going to give, he should rethink his website motto "Fine foods and Personal Service."

Oh my GLOB! Why didn't I come here sooner? I've lived around the area my whole life and today, TODAY was my first time going in for a sandwich. Love, love, LOVE this place! Did you hear me? LOVES IT! Fresh bread plus quality meat equals 100% deliciousness! I ordered a Toscano it has Salami, coppa, pepperoncini plus all the conidments (if you want them) on dutch crunch bread! Goodness, my mouth is still salivating thinking about that awesome sandwich. Darn it, I think I'll become a regular in the future due to this tasty food venture. My stomach thanks you!

Seriously - Where Everyone Knows Your Name ... or at least your face :) Everyone behind the counter smiles and says hi to me all of the time. The customer service here is AMAZING. The other day, my boyfriend and I stopped by 5 minutes before closing time. We walked in, saw that all of the meat was put away and walked out. We were back in the car when one of the butchers actually ran out to tell us that he would get whatever we wanted out of the back. Seriously? I've never had anyone go out of their way in that manner. I was so impressed. We ended up getting a 7 pound pork roast - slow cooked it the next day and it was delicious!! I probably stop by Guerra's once a week or more for random groceries, wonderful steaks, bacon, ground beef, and the list goes on... I ordered one of the Free Range Diestel Turkeys last year for Thanksgiving and it turned out great! I've already put in my order for a turkey this year!!

I like this place a lot. Especially in a city where the grocery stores don't really offer a great selection of fresh meat. I'm a steak and seafood connoisseur and know what to look for and what to ask when buying. My girlfriend lives just a couple blocks away from Guerra's and I used to buy all my meat here. I have never purchased seafood here but that is more that I am from Seattle and am not convinced that San Francisco can get super fresh, in-season seafood. I've bought several different types of steaks, ribs, and pork here. All of it tasted great and was marbled just right. This is where I buy my Thanksgiving rib-roasts every year and some of the cuts that aren't in the main-stream. The website is also very useful and unexpected coming from a neighborhood butcher. One time I came in just before closing and saw that the meat was all put back in the freezer and I left because I hate being that guy that asks them to bring things back out. The guy followed us out and got us what we wanted (a pork shoulder for pulled pork sandwiches). My girlfriend recounts this story in the review below. I just want to second how awesome I think that was by the clerk. They also make sandwiches and sell cold-cuts. I've never had a sandwich but I did buy some turkey legs once. The line was long so it must be good and they always seem to have a lunch rush. Anyway, thumbs up for service, meat quality and reasonable prices. Wish this was close to my house in the Marina.

Guerra Quality Meats feels like a Mom and Pop Italian deli you would find in NY. You can buy your classic Italian deli meats: salami, mortadelli, pepperoni etc all sliced on the spot, along with specialty items like fresh mozzarella, pesto, and other Italian things. I came here for the sandwiches and had the Italian sandwich: which had salami, mortadelli, and ham. It was delicious and definitely generous on the meat. The price was decent, comparable to most sandwich places and they used freshly sliced meat on the spot. The service was friendly and fast. Parking in the area is also not bad. I definitely recommend Guerra's.

Sandwiches normally suck. Guerra does not suck. It is delicious. Whatever the special is is terrific. Guerra sandwich + Kettle chips + Baci from the counter = happiness. I also bought a whole air chilled chicken from them once and it was superior to other chickens. YUM!

We travel across town just to buy meat here. Prices are reasonable, the staff is unbelievably responsive and efficient and friendly, and the meat is top notch. If they were around the corner I wouldn't buy meat any place else. Pro Tip: for holidays you can call ahead and they'll have your meat packed and ready to go.

Not far from Stonestown is a nice little deli that serves up some nice sando's. Last friday stopped in for a Tuscan. It was loaded with salami, hot coppa, provolone, lettuce and tomatoe. Your choice of mayo or an olive oil vinaigrette. $6.00 for a decent sandwich that is much much better than subway. Enough for two light eaters. Next time, I'll try their soppresata sando.

Possibly the best meat shop in the city. Here are the reasons: (1) Great selection of quality deli meat. (2) Workers are nice and helpful --- they all seem to care about their work. Brothers (owners) are usually there. (3) Home made salads are great. (4) Takeout sandwiches made with quality meat and fresh bread --- far better than Roxie Food Center. TIP: At the deli counter, ask them to tell you which items were homemade. They are the best; usually have homemade turkey, roast beef, ham, etc.

Fuck. Yeah. Bitches. I figured going to this place for some lamb burger ingredients would probably be a safer bet than dirty ass Chinatown. Turns out it was a really smart decision. This place is clean as a hospital (even though hospitals are pretty dirty) and friendlier than Uncle Bubba when I was just a wee lad. I awkwardly browsed back and forth for a couple minutes looking for some ground lamb as one of the butchers was chatting up this woman about neighborly things ( picking up kids from soccer and other nice shit). Finally, I grew some balls and stepped up to the counter. One of the butchers in back immediately saw that I was ready and asked me what I wanted. Since I couldn't find the ground lamb, I asked him what cuts would be good to ground up for lamb burgers. He replied, "how about the ground lamb?" Derp. T'was right next to me, but he said it in a non-douchey way, and added a couple interesting facts about what's in ground lamb. Ya learn something new everyday. Without skipping a beat, he packed up a nice loaf (1.5lbs for less than $10) and helped me get some fine ass buns to put my no-longer-missing meat in. We then started talking about banking and shit. To sum it up: pretty good variety of meats, cheeses, friendly people, and overall great atmosphere. Oh yeah, the food. Extremely fresh lamb with no gristles or other crap in it. The buns also seemed pretty fresh and were a perfect consistency (not too soft, not too hard) for some dank ass, medium-rare, burgers. Go to this place.

I love this place. Real butchers - knowledgeable and helpful. It has a real neighborhood feel, no hipster drama (it's the Parkside), just regular folks who appreciate quality and service. I've shopped here twice now and have tried their beef stewing meat and some Rocky chickens. They have a great selection of meat - beef, chicken, turkey, fish, and even rabbit. The meat is mostly organic, the butchers are friendly and they will be happy to cut up your meat any way you like it. Everything I've prepared with their meats has been delicious! Parking is plentiful and easy in the neighborhood - a definate plus!

I love this place. Decent selection of quality meats, great sandwiches, nice deli options, and a few amazing sweet treats. It's not cheap and the selection of cuts isn't mind-blowing, but it's high quality and fresh. Definitely stop by if you're into eating things that had parents.

hands down one of my favorite places to shop. Good Meat. Good Knowledge. Great staff. Easy to find. Ample parking and safeway is right down the street. This Establishment has become one of my regular stops for quality foodstuffs. I also believe it's relatively cheap. Try it out, ask for Matt or Dan.

Think of Molinaris of the Sunset district... Usually go here for sandwiches. They have the best bread....and cold cuts. Never gotten the meats, but they look good...

I'm a regular and come here for the meats. Never tried the sandwiches or other deli stuff. Service is good, but you need to step up. No standing around passively or you won't get served. Prices are fair and the quality is high. I've gotten some really tasty meat here. The only issue I have is that it's hard to get any info about where their meat comes from. I wish they would list the supplier beside the cut. I also wish they would carry a wider selection of grass-fed meat. Even when I special ordered I couldn't get grass-fed beef in the cut I wanted. So I continue to come because they're the best I've found, but I would switch loyalties in a heartbeat if a butchershop came around with the same level of service plus detailed info on suppliers and a full selection of grass-fed beef, lamb, pork, etc. I've partially compensated by buying meat direct from ranchers, but sometimes you need the talents of a good butcher too.

The best sandwich I've had in the city. Classic family run Italian deli, just super high quality across the board. The type of place you could grab lunch at everyday.

I went here on Saturday and bought many delicious treats for lunch and dinner, for about 35 dollars. I got carrot salad (delicious sweet vintage treat), a great sandwich with quality meats and cheeses, pasta salad, a bunch of asparagus, 4 delicious meatballs, pasta, and 2 kinds of pasta sauce (bolognese and marinara). When my friend Ted came over for dinner after work, he LOVED the old style meal.

Last minute ham shanks to make my Mommy's Portuguese bean soup. I've heard fantastic things about this place, always meant to stop in, never did until tonight.... What a shame.... It's so close to where I live. 3 minutes before closing.... We were the last customers...... Don't need to go into details.......... What's important.................................. The kind of service we received so close to closing time is a testament as to why this place is so loved and has been around for so long. Proof is in the doing.... PRIDE. (I am so gonna be back!)

Guerra is incredible. They have got a great selection of local organic meats, as well as any thing else you could grill, roast, or bbq. They are always very friendly and greet you with a smile. They also have most everything you'll need to whip up a quick meal. Highly recommend.

This is your friendly neighborhood butcher/deli. And in my case it truly is as I live about a block away. And have seen meat being delivered numerous times over the years. They are a true butcher as they receive whole carcasses and break it down here. Excellent meat selection. They have good sandwiches and excellent deli items, including your usuals such as mac or potato salad. You must try the smoked turkey legs and wings. OMG! So good. They also have bread, pasta, milk, chips, drinks, and a small selection of produce-carrots, onions, and the like. Their produce is not going to be on par with say the farmer's market but if you're making chicken soup or stew and forgot something you will be able to get it here. So if you forgot something on your regular grocery store run you can get it here. They are now open on Sundays and online ordering is available as well. Sundays are a plus as I'm sure I'm not the only who does the majority of grocery shopping on Sundays. As some other yelpers have said their service can be spotty. Sometimes regulars seem to get much more personalized attention than those that they don't know. . On the whole...Yay for Guerra.

Love the neighborhood meat market chatter. Come in here and you'll get a good sandwich and choice cuts of meat. Plus, you can catch up on the local gossip as many of the people in line seem to know each other. I loved the Italian sandwich I got and the turkey was very good too. Prices were not too bad either.

Heaven on Earth. Stop what you are doing and go now. No, really, right now. It's 32 minutes to closing time. I could eat out of this place forever. Do you have a date? Girl/Boy/MTF/FTM/FTMTF coming over? Listen carefully. The only place you need to shop is Guerra Quality Meats. They have the breads, vegetables, meats, cheese, wines, sauces, sides and edibles to make your next home made culinary master piece a huge success. Planning a picnic? Read above, they have everything you'll need to impress. Guerra Quality Meats. Eat well.

Since moving here I had a craving for an italian sub one day and I went to a place in North beach that starts with a M..... and had their prosciutto and hot coppa in one of their gourmet sandwiches and just thought it was good but nothing spectacular. I moved from NYC recently and trying that M place I was kinda of disappointing because I figured if that's the best in SF then I would have to end my quest in finding a good italian sub in SF. Being at a dinner party one night, italian subs were brought up by me and my sister said try Guerra's after my mediocre comment about the M place. So I went in the store for the first time without expecting too much because my sister hasn't lived on the east coast for some time now so what does she know. I was greeted by a nice Chinese woman and admitedly I was a little surprised at first. In my head I said wait a minute I don't want a chinese person making my italian sub. I order my Silician sub anyways. The sandwich is composed of hot coppa,Salame, provolone and Jalapenos on ciabatta bread. I ask for salt/pepper, oil and vinegar because you can't not have that on an italian sub. So I I bring it home and take a bite into it and I'm in heaven... I truly taste the love that went into making the coppa and the salame. I finish off the rest of the sandwich really quickly. They give a good amount of meat in their sandwich and the Chinese woman can definitely make a mean sandwich! They make the best salame and coppa that I've tried so far in SF, my hats off to them.

Guerra's is my go-to Butcher shop. Not only is it conveniently located on the L line, it is smack between Safeway and SFWTC so I don't have to travel far if they don't have something for my dish of choice. But they usually do : ) For example, I was making Bucatini Carbonara a few Friday's ago and knew that I would go to Guerra's for the pancetta needed for the dish. I had stopped at Safeway for various items, but couldn't find Bucatini (thick, round pasta). I held out for Guerra's, and they had thick pasta of course (perciatelli, which is a close substitute). Looking around, I could have picked up everything I needed at Guerra's, from the Extra Virgin Olive Oil to the Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, to the robust Tuscan wine that was the recommended pairing. And if they don't have it in the front for sale, they will go in the back and find something for you. How do I know? Well, because Robert (Guerra's owner) gave me his homemade Osso Bucco recipe on the fly one day: I came in with the recipe that they keep on the counter. Robert says, "No, no, you have to try my Osso Bucco" and proceeds to write his recipe on a piece of butcher paper (which I still have). It uses various ingredients like carrots & celery, which they had in the front for sale, but also veal stock, which they didn't. So what does he do? He goes back and gets me a frozen container of it! I walk out with step-by-step instructions and everything I need. Not only was it delicious, but I have the hand-written recipe to pass onto my friends & family, along with a great story of old San Francisco customer service : )

Oh How I miss your meat!! When I lived in The Avenue's I would get all our deli meat from here. They had the best Roast Beef and would ask you how rare/cooked you would like it and slice it there for you. YummY! They have a great selection of deli meat we only tried the Turkey, Roast Beef and Genoa Salami. Their chicken salad is awesome! Just slap it between slices of white bread and chow down! Their ravioli's are good too - ask them to heat it up and walk home happy! The deviled eggs are great too! I could go on and on about the deli part but I have more.... Butcher side... Freshest steaks - poterhouse, ny strip, t-bone you name it they got it! And super fresh and they ask how hungry you are so they can get you the size you want. I have been coming here since I was little so get to know your butchers! They also have the best stuffed pork chops and let you know at what degree's and how long to bake it. OH MY GAWD.... Pre-order your Thanksgiving Turkey here too! Geez Louise! AWESOMENESS! Seriously! They do have a mini selection of fresh cheeses and breads and some veggies too. Try some of the ravioli's in the freezer and their homemade soup stocks! Such a great addition to the neighborhood, great friendly and loyal employees! I had my mom bring us some food from there. Iwas never so happy to see an igloo cooler in my life! Oh ya, it was nice to see Mom too. BTW - it gets super busy at lunch time because they make sandwiches too!

Ran in not long before close, the staff were kind and attentive, letting me know I had fifteen minutes and that I didn't need to rush. I was just picking up two filets, but wanted a chance to check out their stock... so I meandered a bit before deciding I was good to go. I don't mind paying a little more for locally owned places like this. Quality over quantity.

in a pinch i picked up two pre-marinated slabs of skirt steak. paprika, italian seasonings, garlic powder, salt, pepper among other things were abundantly dry rubbed on the beef cuts. to make extreme delight, these were tender and perfectly seasoned. this is a nice alternative on those days when you're just running overtime with work and other errands. great option from Guerra's!

Quick and delicious! The Italian sandwich was AMAZING! I used my Yelp iPhone app to find this place as I was driving through the city.... looking for a good sandwich at 10am. I was so pleased to find this place open so early! The staff was super helpful and friendly, and my made-to-order sandwich was so perfect. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is it! I have a great experience at Guerra's, every time. These guys know how to handle meat and exude professionalism. I got a leg of lamb broken down for kabobs a few weeks ago and the butcher did it quickly with minimal meat waste. I had this done at another butcher in the city and the cubes ended up different sizes with the silverskin still attached. Geurra's is efficient and most of the time they're friendly. The downside is they don't have much free-range and/or organic meat - but I'm guessing you can order this ahead of time.

  • MLD L.

I've read many of the reviews on Yelp and agree with the positive and negative. But, I'm still a fan. Here's why (positive) and sometimes not (negative): Positive: Fresh meat: We order our Thanksgiving turkey here every year. It's great to pick up your dinner for the evening and know it's going to be a good buy and fresh. You can call ahead and reserve a roast chicken and pick it up on the way home. If you talk to John (he's great...energetic, friendly, and so helpful), he might throw one on the spit just for you. Neighborhood gem: The deli and butcher on the corner is just too good to be true especially in the Sunset where the L-Taraval roars by. Nice stop on the way home. No healthy food here but it does have your standard deli items. Sandwiches: Always a good plan if you are on the go or have to get food for a road trip. Grab some chips, fruit, and some sides (good, rich red potato salad, mac or carrot salad). Butchers on the Premises: If you are into good, quality meat, this is the place besides the old Bryan's (now closed and moved into the main market) in Laurel Village. Tradition & New Services: Now open on Sundays, ordering on-line, continuing to provide traditional service that is uniquely San Francisco and to the neighborhood. Negative...but room to grow: Service: It does appear to be spotty and brusk. I have experienced most of what other Yelpers have written and have wondered the same thing. Is it me? If you are regular, you will get major attention but it's always nice for long-time regulars feel welcomed. Produce: Not sure where they get it but it's not up to grade. Would be good to know if they support and showcase local farmers and fresh, organic produce which would be a real win. Cheese & Bread: Bread is OK but sometimes the cheese goes bad right away after purchase which makes me think it sits in the case for too long. Maybe they should keep to the standards; that is, the ones you slice for your sandwiches besides the parmesan-reggiano. Not sure about the cleanliness factor. I have noticed the handling of the food and bills without gloves but have managed to survive despite a sensitive stomach. So, for me it holds up well! In summary, it's a destination that is worth a visit for the right meal (your holiday roast, fresh meats for tonight's dinner, sandwiches on the go, a roast chicken fresh off the spit, homemade pies around the holidays). Thank goodness for Guerra's as our neighborhood deli.

In retrospect, ordering the turkey by itself on my first visit was clearly a mistake. For the full experience, you need to have a sandwich. A few bites into my epic turkey creation piled ever so high on wheat bread, I mentally went from A-OK to I'm Definitely A Fan. My stomach agreed.

I wish butchers were consistent with the quality of the products they sell. No matter what day I ask when they got "whatever" in they respond with "today". Yeah, right, that's why I find grey at the center of the hamburger when I get home.

Can't believe that I haven't reviewed this place yet. It's a great place for MEAT!! The butchers know what they are doing, and they are happy to work there, unlike...safeway? Paper wrapped fresh meat feels great, even before I made them amazing. I especially love the selection of lamb here, they have probably 6+ kinds of different cuts/parts. This you don't get from safeway or lucky or whole foods. Lamb shoulder is cheap, and makes a great stew/and braised lamb dish. More fat=more tender. The pasta sauce, meat sauce, soup stock, dessert are all pretty authentic italian. The cheese selection is small, but full of good stuff. The fresh produce is small too, but you can go down 1 block to the parkside farmer's market. I never get meat from anywhere else except Guerra. This is how god it is. I was very tempted at Bi-rite, which I absolutely love, but i came back to Guerra.

This is a very small nice deli that I am very happy I was introduced to. 1 star (Very nice staff) + 1star (SO SO SO FRESH deli meats) + 1 star (great tasting side dishes, i.e. deviled egg) + 1 star (clean, neat, and cozy store) = 4 stars I usually get the roast beef sandwich on dutch crunch with all my personal condiments, but something I ask for them to add on is pesto -- which really gives it the great taste I love. It definitely has MUCH MUCH fresher meats, cheeses, breads, etc then my fav sandwich place (Little Luca), but it just doesn't have that AMAZING garlic & hot sauce that they have for me to give them that last star. None-the-less, a great quiet small deli that dishes out great fresh sandwiches every time.

I've been to Guerra's a few times now, and every time, the service is knowledgeable and friendly. And they all seem to enjoy working here. Imagine that! It's sad that this alone is such a cause for celebration, but it is. Anyway, I've had multiple turkey sandwiches here, and they are delicious! They have lots of other meats, including daily specials, but I'm a bit stuck in my ways when it comes to my sandwich. Roast turkey, Swiss cheese, mustard, tomato, lettuce, pickles, and occasionally avocado, on a sourdough roll. Might sound boring to some, but it's my standard, and it also makes it easy to compare sandwiches from different delis. The sandwich is actually why only 4 stars and not 5. Their sourdough rolls don't seem like sourdough to me. I do like their ciabatta though, if only I could remember to change up my order when I come here! I've also had a few different meats from the butcher shop, and they definitely serve quality! Both the pork and chicken I had from here were amazingly fresh tasting, and cooked up perfectly when I brought them home. The marinades are great too, for those days you want a little something different.

Every neighborhood should have a butcher as good as these guys. Excellent cold cuts. They make they're own roasted turkey breast and honey baked ham. Excellent potato and macaroni salads. THe meat is great quality and affordable. Much more attractive than meat wrapped in plastic at the local Safeway (no longer an option for me). Their Italian sausage is my favorite. Help bring back the neighborhood butcher and give these guys a visit.

The warehouse store didn't have bone-in prime rib. I went to Guerra's to check it out. I didn't realize how much foot traffic they had. It's a nice place. They keep a clean shop, visually. I bought a three bone rib roast. It looked great. I would go back to try the other cuts of meat.

I don't think I've written a review for this place (and for a good reason). I gave it a good 4-5 tries for deli sandwiches and once for the butcher shop. Can't really speak for the butcher shop part, as I think I cooked my pre-stuffed, pre-seasoned cornish game hen a little later than I was supposed to, but the sandwiches...well. Even after the shop boy collected my money and then proceeded to make my sandwich with his bare hands with no sanitization inbetween, I gave this place one more try. But somehow, things never quite tasted the same after that...

Well, well, well...I've detected a theme in SF sandwich shops. Or could it be a conspiracy????? I've driven past Guerra frequently, since moving to the "west of Twin Peaks" area seven years ago. Today I stopped in for only the second time. In the mood for a hearty lunchtime sandwich, I considered trying something new at Ike's. But, as noted in my first review of Ike's, I knew "hearty" wouldn't be part of the experience there. For some reason, my mind flashed on Guerra's - maybe because I needed to make a stop in West Portal, and that's in the same direction. Before leaving home, I checked Guerra's website and figured out what I would order: pastrami on rye with mustard, pickles, and roasted peppers. The guy who took my order was friendly and pleasant. But even though he repeated my order to be sure he got it right, when I got home I realized he forgot the roasted peppers! Maybe I got spoiled living in NYC, where a proper deli would give you four times as much meat, but even after nearly a decade here, SF sandwiches are just too wimpy for me. Here's what a pastrami sandwich is supposed to look like: yelp.com/biz_photos/xOMr… Or at least like this: yelp.com/biz_photos/V7lX… While waiting for wimpy to be assembled, I strolled around the store. The butcher case is filled with top-quality fare, so I'm thinking I'll return. But it won't be for a sandwich; maybe the dry-rubbed hangar steak, which looked intriguing... Based on the sandwich alone, this would be a two-star review. 1/2 star bonus for the 100-point score on SF Department of Public Health inspection certificate, and 1/2 for motivating me to return with an impressive meat case.

I gave this place a subpar review a while back, and need to update. The staff is second to none. Incredibly friendly, equally knowledgable, and really some of the best people to chat with and deal with that you'll find at any type of establishment. Just great folks. The product is also very good. The sirloin here is more tender and tasty than any Safeway ribeye I've ever had, and unfortunately, I've had a lot. The meat is great, the pork is great, the crab is great, and the cheese is great as they sell Cowgirl Creamery Red Hawk for $4 less than Whole Foods. In general, the only knock on this place is that it's a bit on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for.

  • Espana S.

This is not a comprehensive review, I mean I like that the place is family owned, I've had a tasty sandwich from the deli and they seem to be a good butcher shop but honestly I come here for one reason only; the bacon. My roommate and I have bacon and eggs every weekend. That's a LOT of bacon over the past two or so years and we've picked up many brands in that time. None have been terrible (although Oscar Mayer comes close) and some have been pretty damned good, but the best hands down has been the Guerra bacon. Whenever we end up purchasing anything but Guerra we notice and our breakfast is a little less wonderful. So now you know.

I can't believe I've never reviewed Guerra's. A good friend of ours is a butcher here. Infact, we don't call it Guerra's, we call it 'Danny's.' LOL What makes Guerra's so special is the staff. They are very informative and friendly, and go out of their way to recommend a specific meat, offer recipes, and cut the meat to your preference. The meats are delicious as are their premade foods and deli sandwiches. OH! and their marinades and sauces are yum! Definately don't pass up Guerra's on your way to Safeway!

Deliciousness. When you are in need of somthing delicious for lunch while near Taraval and 19th this place is the spot. First off, the minute you walk in its obvious that you are in a delicatessan...not a sando spot. It smells great, and the staff is awesome and once you take that first bite though the perfectly crunchy fresh roll then, and then only will you know of the Guerra Meat powers. Go now.

These guys know meat, and they are helpful - like old fashioned customer service. I love their hanger steak, rubbed with herbs and ready to pan sear in an iron fry pan for a quick dinner. But I really love their leg of lamb, which I order whole, to be roasted on a spit. I was thrilled to learn that they carry American lamb - not that gamey New Zealand stuff. Plus they are cheaper than Whole Foods or Bryans. Now, the guys are beginning to carry more pasture raised, sustainable meat, a nice addition..

Have driven by this place many times. I made my first visit last Saturday for some stew meat. The place was crowded, but the service was fast and friendly. The line was building up and an employee (owner/manager?) in a suit and tie jumped in and started taking orders. He gave advice to a customer in front of me on how to make a beef stew with vinegar. I was really glad to see attention to customer service. They could install one of those number taking systems to make things smoother and allow you to shop while waiting for your place in line. The meat itself was delicious. I paid a little more than at Safeway, but the quality was a lot better. I'll be back. if you want to read about my beef stew go here: mrjoeskitchen.blogspot.c…

Guerra's carries Mary's chicken, which is air-chilled, which means healthier and less water-logged so it tastes better. Unlike some other stores that carry Mary's, they have it by the piece in addition to the whole chicken. So you can buy a bone-in or boneless chicken breast, for example, and have the best chicken I've found in a commercial market. (If you do get it, be aware that not being waterlogged results in quicker cooking.) And everything else continues to be great.

For the day-to-day stuff, I don't recommend coming here. This is a special occasion kind of place. I went here last Saturday to pick up some prime rib. Most grocers don't have prime rib but Guerra has everything you'd want. They have great quality meat and a decent price. I've been looking for a good butcher and I think I've found it. I also saw many different cuts of lamb which have been hard to find. I couldn't sustain myself shopping here weekly but if you need to impress, come here for your meat.

Yup im Italian and live around here so il pop in bi-weekly. Heck il even invent my own sandwich here since i feel so at home in this delicatessen. Its definably my favorite kind of business, a family owned business. =) They have a huge selection of meats, ravioli and their own brand of marinades. oh the sandwich i get is the prosciutto with mortadella A+ with pesto I ALMOST gave this place 4 stars but remembered they're now open Sundays!

My only stop for quality meat, seafood and deli products. You get quality offerings, amazing service, and can pretty much find everything you need to make a wonderful dinner in one place. On my most recent visit, I ran in with only, literally, 3 minutes to shop......I told the guy that I needed to make dinner for 3 in 15 minutes, and that I only had 3 minutes to shop for everything. He packed up steaks, a container of soup, some veggies, some breads and cheeses, some wines, and gave me instructions on how to prepare it all in less than 2.5 minutes. And of course, I went home put it all together, and looked like a gourmet chef. Everyone in here is always amazingly helpful.

Ok, I'm German and I grew up in a butcher store ( my grandfather owned it)- it took me a long time to find a butcher store to meet my expectations! Germans are difficult- me included! I have no idea about the sandwiches-, BUT there meat counter is outstanding! I find everything i need to make all the German meat dishes! The guys know how to cut it, if I tell them, what I'm making! They even tell you how to cook it- that what a butcher is supposed to do- try to do that at Safeway -:). I have not gotten meat anywhere else in a LONG time. Ah- and the no gloves and handling money thing some people bring up- well, we did not have disposable gloves wen I grew up and somehow people survived :-) OH- try the smoked salmon- the BEST in SF!

    (5)
  • Bessie C.

I love the sandwiches and deviled eggs here. I highly recommend the Lucca chicken sandwich or smoked salmon sandwich on dutch crunch. I think the sandwiches here are comparable or better than Roxie's depending what you order. Only star off is that they sometimes don't wear gloves, and handle money and meat, which can be a little unsettling.

Everytime I come here, I am warmly greeted. It is clear that the moment you walk in, you know they take care of their customers. I get a different person each time I come in, and each one is friendly and there is occasional joking. They are helpful, knowledgeable, and prepare your package just the way you ask them to. As far as the quality goes, it is better than anything I've bought at supermarkets. It is fresh, lean, and tasty. The quality is definitely worth the price! Haven't tried any of the deli stuff yet, and I plan to get to the cheesecakes and tiramisu sometime in the near future. Love it here!

Mediocre sandwiches. I had ordered the prosciutto sandwich, and it wasn't that great. The sandwich was a bit dry and the prosciutto tasted different. Not quite sure. The turkey sandwich was really good though. The turkey meat tasted fresh, which i like. I hate processed meat. The service was alright... the guy didn't look to happy when I told him I had 4 sandwiches to order. They're really slow at making sandwiches as well. Took him about 15 mins to get my order done.

Guerra's is the best! Not only is the meat of great quality, I really like the people working there. They're super friendly and so helpful. They always smile and say hello. I can walk in with a general area of type of food i might want for dinner and ask for a suggestion and they'll give me a few. As with all great butchers, they'll prep the meat however I ask. They'll perfectly slice meat for stir fry, etc. They get fresh crab every morning and cook it onsite. They roast chickens so if I don't have time to cook my own dinner, i can get a hot one on my way home from work. Their meat is also forgiving. I'm sure this is due to freshness... if i over cook their chicken, it's still tender/moist. I'm very fortunate that I live nearby and can pop in a couple/few times a week. I'll be sad if I move and have to go across town to go here, but I would do it! (My in-laws live across town... they got a pork roast from here last time they came to visit & they RAVED about how good it turned out. They go to Marina meats and another place in North Beach, but they even stop at Guerra's whenever they're in our hood!) Also... I just read Jasmin C.'s review from July 09 w/ 1 star. I've been going here for a few years. They don't have tickets/numbers, so I'm not sure if she left her review for the right butcher/deli.

Resolutions for 2009 I will go the long way home to stop here and get quality meats. I will savor the tender, flavorful products that I can purchase here for only slightly more than than I would pay for some plasticized version I'd get elsewhere. I will never again wait in a hideous hour-long holiday line at a fruffy Noe Valley meat market again. I will behave appropriately when the hot butcher offers to carry big purchases to my car. Oh wait, except for this last one, I think I already do all these things. I never was much of a resolution-maker anyway. The point is, I want to never ever forget about this amazing neighborhood meat market. We bought our turkeys from here for Thanksgiving this year, and it was the single most pleasant turkey purchase I have ever encountered. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I walked right up to the counter during the after work "rush," waited approximately 2 minutes for my turn. The handsome Italian butcher got my 2, 20 lb turkeys, I paid and reached to grab the turkeys. NO!! The hot young meat man *insisted* on carrying them all the way to my car. I felt like I'd suddenly been transported to the 1950's, when chivalry & service were still things for which one should strive. And beyond all of this, the turkeys on Thanksgiving were absolutely delicious. Final resolution: I will spread the word about this fabulous shoppe, so that others may benefit from this charming, olde world, high quality meat market. It is, in my opinion, the best in the city.

Guerra Quality Meats, what can I say? I have been coming here since I was in middle school. This place is the best, the quality of the meat here is fresh and delectable. I usually come here for the dutch crunch and roast beef or the sourdough w/ herb roasted pork. They sell a variety of meats and when I have parties at my house, I usually stop by here to buy the meats. The meat here is comparable to the Italian shops in North Beach while still near to the sunset. If you have never been here, I would most definitely recommend this place!!!

Great quality meats, wonderful friendly service. Has grass-fed beef and all products are free of antibiotics. Some products are a bit pricey, but the quality can't be beat. I also love that there is enough staff in there to handle the amount of customers. Wait times are not that long. The pancetta is WONDERFUL!!!

Supermarket meat departments make me sad (institutional = yuck!) - so with the exception of Tower Market/Mollie Stone's, we try to buy meat at local butchers. Stepping into Guerra's makes you feel like you have either been transported to Europe or back in time. The family-owned business is always full of people, and the service is consistently kind and helpful. Prices are fair, and the place is immaculate. Everything about the place speaks to the pride and care of the owners. Not only do they carry meat, (all types, including Rocky chickens), they also make sandwiches and have deli things like salads and deviled eggs. The deviled eggs are wonderful, and if my spouse goes there forgets to bring me one, he's liable to get the stink-eye from me. There is a small but good selection of cheeses, breads, jams and other condiments, too. If you want a nice piece of meat from a real butcher, check out Guerra. Oh, and that had better be a deviled egg in the bag for me (*stink eye*)

Old style meat joint. Deli counter, lots of raw flesh in the case ,all seeminly fresh,I have been shopping here for a few years and they always seem ro have good quality freshly dead animal flesh which I crave on a regular basis. Most of the guys behind the counter are pro's but a couple of them have an arrogant side that is annoying.. I want fresh flesh and lets get on with it.don't need any op's on food. This is a dead cow palace.

Not from the city, but I always make it out to Guerra's when I'm out there. I was introduced to this place from my SF born and raised ex-boyfriend (probably the best thing to ever come from this relationship haha) One of favorite foods ever is sandwiches, and Guerra's is on the top of my list! I always get cold pastrami, which they cut for you when you order, on their freshly baked dutch crunch (not sure where they get it from), with everything on it! Other than their sandwiches, they have amazing sides also, like deviled eggs. Then if you want to complete your lunch take your sandwich to Ocean beach and enjoy!

Sometimes, the elevator at work gets stuck between levels. It makes an ear-splitting shriek and then the doors open very quickly to show a concrete slab. Up at the top of the doors, above the concrete, you can see a sliver of light through which people's feet scurry by on the busy floor that you WOULD have stopped at had the elevator not decided to play tricks on you. Then it lurches. And for a split second, you're reminded of every horror film you've seen where the elevator cables get cut and the pretty starlet screams, faints, and falls twenty stories to her death. My stomach feels the same nauseous and queasy feeling when I get to Guerras after they've closed. I stare through the windows, not knowing where to turn. The staff here is over-the-top friendly. If you call ahead, they'll cook the meat for you. Best selection of sausages that I've seen in the City. Freshly baked bread, goat cheese, pasta dishes and salads galore. Local AND Italian products, great for preparing a hearty family dinner at your home. In my opinion, eating their food is a much better way to plummet to your death.

We bought our Rib Roast here for Thanksgiving here and for the quality of meat provided and the price we were very pleased. You can go online and order your meats to get what you want more specifically. I'd definitely go back if I wanted to get some quality meat.

They have a good selection of meats and helpful butchers. I especially love their hand made sausages. The deli is great. I got a cibatta with prosciutto, pesto and bufalo mozzarella the other day that came pretty damn close to the ones I used to get at the cheese shop across the street from my apartment in Florence. Most importantly, I just get a good feeling from going in there. If you live in the Sunset and eat meat this should be your diamond in the Asian market and Safeway rough.

This is a great place for some fine quality meats. I stopped by to get some meats for my sandwich for lunch one day. They range from deli styles meats like bolonge, different types of salami, turkey, roast beer and more. I had asked for some pepperoni, and the girl who worked there said they didn't carry but she introduced me to something that was the closet to it, which was a type of salami that had a slight kick to it. I absolutely loved it!! They also have raw meats. I haven't tried any of those yet but they do bright red and so you know its fresh. You can order as little or as much as you like. I told her i only wanted 1/4 a pound, just so i could try a few other things. She was nice and pleasant and didn't give me any attitude about ordering so little. Most other types of delis would think I'm crazy for buying so little, but hey, it was just a quick stop for some luncheon meats for my sandwich so i wouldn't need a pound of 3 different types of meats. There's also sandwiches that you can order with the variety types of deli meats they have. You can even order pounds of meat for big parties.

Guerra is my local neighborhood deli and it has helped me in hard times. Hard times as in... um empty fridge. When I'm stuck with one slice of stale bread and maybe three olives, it's time to stroll on down to good ol' Guerra's for a sandwich. These guys use fresh ingredients, top quality meats (the mortadella and liverwurst are to die for), and great rolls. They are also fast and friendly. Behind the counter, there's a menu for the special sandwich of the day, my favorite being the fresh mozzarella and pesto. Check out Guerra's for those emergency empty fridge moments. You'll be surprised at the tasty.

Great selection of meats without the hassle of lines. We usually get the chicken apple sausages and the lamb here. The quality of the meat is fresh and the seasoning of the sausages is very good. It's a neighborhood grocer that caters on service so their prices are just a bit more.

I am sorry to the other sandwich places I have ever been to with the exception of a couple who know who they are...But everytime I come here, it's almost like a religious experience...Except, there is no God...Just cold cuts on bread...If made right, there's nothing more beautiful... So from what I just posted, you can see I love my sandwiches. I love the way they taste and the way they can make you feel when you order the right one. May it be religious or orgasmic, a great sandwich can make or break your mood. Get a perfectly made sandwich and you won't care if you were working a triple shift for a thankless boss. And I think I might have found a place that makes them. I must admit, I passed by here many a times when I was going to and from work on the L Taraval train. Never knew why I never stopped for a sandwich. ALways getting off at the Safeway stop...I know, I know. Work for Safeway, now eating at Safeway...I am pathetic sometimes, I will admit that much. So one day I decided to go in for a sandwich and see how the place is. Scope it out because I was kinda getting bored with the whole atomic subs and the toasting and shit like that. I look at the menu and smiled. It was freaking simple and normal. Only the daily specials and regular specials are on the board along with the choices of meats and cheeses and breads. Clean and simple board. Not like some places that spend money on putting down EVERY SINGLE LAST STUPID sandwich name on the board...Less choices means less time to fuck around in line and making ME wait! Yeah, it's all about ME!!! I live and die by their Sicilian and Tuscan or Tuscanny...You'll understand which ones I am talking about when you go there. One has spicy coppa and the other has a mild coppa. So freaking good...And on rye bread...Even better. Lots of meat and made to order. How lovely is that? And the sides they have are nice, too! I love the orzo olive salad with the sun dried tomatoes. That tastes the best. And maybe a deviled egg...Indulgence is evil sometimes... The menu has things you might wanna try but if you like a regular sandwich, you can always order that too! It's a deli, for crying out loud! You go ahead and order what you want! Trust me! This place is good!

High quality butcher shop, great gourmet sandwich selection, super friendly and helpful staff. They will gladly give you cooking tips for anything you're buying and even have some recipe suggestions available. Also note that you can order any of the "daily" sandwich specials on any day of the week for a small extra charge. The prices may be a bit higher than the grocery store but you get what you pay for (better quality and selection). I love that they always have several cuts of lamb available. They do catering too.

Five stars for a West Coast sandwich. Even back East this would be a solid four star joint. High quality meat, fresh bread, crisp veggies, the all-important inclusion of pickles as part of "everything on it",nice salty cheese...and oil and vinegar, something lacking in the average California deli. I oughta dock 'em a star for their two dollar sodas but, ah, hell, just skip the soda and chow down.

Seriously I don't understand what the hype is all about. I live quite close to this place and had always wanted to try it after reading about how good their sandwiches are. As a sandwich lover, I had to try it. So I finally came here with my bf and he ordered the roast beef sandwhich while I got the milano (turkey, havarti cheese and roasted peppers) both on dutch crunch bread. The service I got was "eh." The guy acted like he wasnt very satisfied with his life and job. It clearly showed it when he took my order and made my sandwiches. After he wrote down my order he let out a big sigh. Not a good sign. There was no eye contact at all. The way he handled the bread and meats...not a lot of love there. Anyways, once the sandwich was in my lap, I was so excited and anxious to try it. I love sandwiches and I just could not wait to tear the wrapper apart and dig the damn thing. Well.........boy was I let down big time. The bread was stale and had no crunch to it at all. It just screwed up the sandwich all together. The havarti cheese was really good. The turkey...eh....dry. My sandwich overall wasnt really good. I just ended up eating the turkey and meat on its own. My bf'ss roast beef sandwich was just as bad. He was so dissappointed he didnt even finish half of it.The roast beef was RIDICULOUSLY dry. Honestly, I dont see myself coming back here. I will stick with my Safeway sandwiches down the block instead.

A few years ago, my boyfriend used to live *right* next door to Guerra's. And being the sandwich people we are, this was a definitely a convenience worth taking advantage of! I was ecstatic....mm sandwiches anytime I want. Well, between 9-7 that is. One day, I came downstairs with a list of goods that the roomies wanted. I walked in, grabbed some chips, a drink, and then went to order the food. But for whatever reason, I was skipped. Over. And over. And over. and Over again. The line was a little lengthy and their meat cases stand fairly tall so I thought maybe I just wasn't being assertive enough. So I said - politely, might I add - "I'm ready to order now!" as soon as he was done with the person - who came after me btw. I got an icy glare from the sandwich maker and he continued to ignore me. I just shut my mouth and stood there. Finally, someone was able to take my order. And then, right in the midst of it, the person left to go make someone elses food! We're talking right in the middle of "No Pickles or......." Not even an excuse me. Not even an "I'm sorry, it'll just be one moment." :( *insert quivering lip and teary eyes* He took three other peoples orders before helping me. And the entire time I was actually ordering, he was talking to another coworker and pretending like the sandwich he was making was a chore. Slamming the bread on the table, being all huffy.puffy! Excuse me sir, but being huffy-puffy is *my* job, not yours! So what do girls do best when they feel like they're being treated like a nuisance and feel like they're being discriminated against? They cry. Yeah thats right you meanies, you made me CRY! 1 star for the sandwich that was kinda good but totally not worth the emotional beating....and for not being able to give zero stars. The salt from my tears must have added a little kick that only Guerra's could supply. Needless to say I havent been back. And I never ever will.

Guerra gave me the worst customer visit I have ever had. I walked in and the guy at the deli counter whom had just finished a sandwich walked away from asking me if I needed anything. I was left there thinking what to do. The guy 5 feet from me was deep in conversation with a customer and he would not even try and get someone to help me. I really wanted to walk out but hung in there for what I needed. I will never go back from the rude customer service that they gave me. If you enjoy being treated truly like a piece of meat and sit there....this is place for you. I would drive out of my way to avoid the rudeness I encountered.

I used to go to them when I was 7 years old with my grandma (she didn't speak English, but it didn't matter at Guerra Brothers) to buy Market Steaks. The wonderful kind guys always called her, "grandma," and showed her all the pieces of meat she pointed at. Can you believe it? We were one of the first Chinese families living in the Sunset, and we ventured to go to an American store instead of going to Chinatown to buy meat. We trusted them that much. Back then, Guerra Brothers was on 22nd and Taraval--3 blocks away from our house. When Walgreen's moved in, I thought the neighborhood was going downhill. I've always liked Guerra's, and I'm 41 now. I could go into that butcher shop and remember my childhood and the old-fashioned butchers, only they're still around. Folks that know their meat. Family. When I was in my twenties and thirties, I got their deli sandwiches while waiting for Kim Addonizio's poetry writing workshop (her workshops were at 7:30pm and on 15th Avenue and Rivera; I was on 14th and Taraval by 6:00pm). I was always early. Part of the reason was probably Guerra's chicken salad sandwiches. I'd sit on someone's staircase and have their really good sandwiches after a hard day's work and before an intense poetry workshop. There is also one video of me at one of Kim's BBQs and about 20 Guerra Brothers' sausages on the grill, and me screaming, I'm Chinese and so repressed. When I was thirty-one, I bought apple chicken sausages for my future-husband's first breakfast with me. I burnt the hell out of those sausages, but my husband swears that they were still good. Now, my husband and I go there to get Filet Mignon and prime rib roast for Christmas at my mother's or my husband's once a year dinner parties. I know the meat is fabulous, quality, prime stuff. I grew up with this place. I've been there on and off through the years, and every time I come back, the quality hasn't changed one bit. It's more expensive than Safeway's or Lucky's or other "regular" butcher's, but one taste and you'll know why they should be more expensive.

One of the best parts about moving to the 'burbs' of SF was finding out that I lived right by Guerras. My lady and I go here pretty much every week for either sandwiches, sausages, organic duck or chicken (they sell Mary's). It feels like a throwback to time when ... Wait, who am I kidding ... I never lived anywhere that had a local butcher. Now I know what I was missing all these years.

Good food, extremely poor (discriminating) service! I've been in here a total of 3 times. The first time they were extremely busy and demanded we give our orders right away, there seemed to be no time to answer questions and those working behind the counter lacked any character and were extremely abrupt. Every time since, has been a disappointment. I thought that perhaps the lack of friendly behavior was just because they were busy. Although I myself have worked in customer service and the food /bevarage industry for a while now and in my opinion there's NEVER an excuse for rudeness. My last attempt was just that, my last. I will never go in there again. I was sick and dressed in sweat pants. I went in with the intention of picking up sandwiches for my roomates and I. I hadn't yet been home and it had been awhile since any of us had been there. Once inside I called to remind them what was on the "menu". All 3 of us are pretty particular about what we don't want on our food. So I had them on the phone so I could properly relay the information to the man behind the counter. Twice he skipped me to help other people, even while I waved my hand to get his attention. He told me no cell phone and I explained I wasn't being rude, I needed to tell him what they wanted to eat. He told me once I was off the phone he'd take my order and said they only had 1 roll left anyway since it was the end of the night. I felt genuinely discriminated against. I am 27 years old, though I look 18. Maybe if I had been an older caucasian lady like the woman standing next to me, I would have been treated with some respect. I will never go in here again.

Many of the previous 1 and 2 star reviews share the same opinion so I should have been forewarned: this place is absolutely the pits with customer service. Here's the scenario when I walked in: an older (white) man is talking with 2 or 3 butchers telling them how busy everyone looks today, blah, blah, blah... A younger (Asian) male assists me after I look over all their meat cases. On my way out before I leave the store, some Italian-made concentrated-tomato-paste-in-a-tube catches my eye so I pick up a box and go back to pay for it. At this time there are at least three (3) men behind the counter and no one else in the store except me. Does anyone help me? No. Not even the Asian dude that selected the osso bucco that I bought. Another man comes out of the walk-out refrigerator, that makes four (4) people behind the counter and no one else in the store except me. Does any help me? No. WHY NOT? At this point I'm getting a little peeved. (Is my hair is messy? Did I wear the wrong color shirt? It can't be because I'm Asian, that guy just sold me 3# of veal.) Finally I say aloud, "Are there any cashiers in here?" The guy closest asks 'sees' me and my item, double-checks the price and goes back to the cash register to ring it up as I leave the store. The last thing I hear is, "Here's your penny if you want it." Hah. Keep the stupid penny. ---If I walked out of the store without paying would anyone have 'seen' me? I didn't come close to having a satisfactory experience at this place; I'll gladly go across town to where there is customer service, after all I AM a customer.

Guerra's kicks ass. I'm so happy to live close to one of the last real honest to goodness butcher shops around. The cuts of meat are great and reasonably priced, especially the steak, pork, and lamb. I only wish they'd expand their selection of grass-fed beef, but it is slowly getting bigger, and I'm sure they'll adjust as demand adjusts. I don't agree with the people that don't like their sandwiches. Come on, guys -- fresh-roasted, fresh-sliced roast beef and turkey for $5.00? Where are you gonna beat that? You'll pay more for a shitty sandwich at Noah's or fucking Starbucks for that matter. If you like real meat on your sandwich, and a lot of it, at a cheap price, this is your place.

I was searching for a somewhat unusual cut of meat (bone-in lamb breast) to make a special meal for a group of friends. Called all my usual spots and was told I had to special order it one week in advance, or pay through the nose. Found Guerra's on Yelp, they had it ready for me the next day at less than 1/5 of the price I had been quoted elsewhere. Since then I've been back for anything I have that's atypical-- they're friendly, high quality, and very reasonably priced.

This is a good neighborhood deli with a large selection of meats, breads, cheeses. It's like a neighborhood grocery store stuck in a time warp. Prosciutto, coppa, sausages are all very good here. Their sandwiches are also decent and nicely priced. They're huge and filled with a lot of meat. Guerra is a reasonably priced, no frills, down to earth, meat / deli / grocery store with good quality meats. For even higher quality meats (but also a bit pricier) and a tad more refined deli, go to Lucca Ravioli in the Mission.

::where everybody knows your nameeeeeeeeeeee:: "HEYYYYYY kimberly!" "KIMBERLAY!" "KIMMYYYY" i always feel welcomed here, and very loved. If you get to know the people here, theyll slab on a slob of meat and cheese into your sandwich!! i usually cant even take a full bite out of the huge sandwich. i was sure i already wrote a review for this place because its so close to my home, i guess i didnt. I know that if i was ever out of a job, i could always rely on these guys. My mom likes to buy corned-beef here on st. patricks day, and we get our thanksgiving turkey and honey ham here for thanksgiving or christmas! My mom gets things for free here all the time, ground beef, luncheon meat..lol things i love here: their homemade carrot cake & brownies!! Theyre on the table top. So I was on the back of my boyfriend's motorcycle driving around the sunset district, looking for a good deli with pastrami sandwiches. The first place we had checked out was out of pastrami, and roastbeef, and kept insisting "But we do have bologna!!" Yeah, thanks... chewy pink processed mystery meat is *almost* like what I wanted, but actually nothing like it.... So we kept on driving through the sunshine and finally stopped at Guerra. As soon as you walk in, the choices of meat are beautifully laid out before you, the bread smells amazing, and the workers (sandwich makers?) were quick to say hello. My boyfriend was happy to have pastrami, and I decided to try the Milano sandwich.... roasted turkey, havarti cheese, grilled pepper, lettuce and tomato on a sourdough roll.... It was SO big and juicy, I can barely describe how good it was. I'll just let my 5 stars do the talking.

Remember when you were a little kid on Field trip day? Somehow my lunches were always just a little more special those days. My soda would be wrapped in foil to keep it cool (I don't know if that really worked, but my mom always did it,), my sandwiches were just a bit tastier and my bag of chips just a bit bigger. If I was lucky I might get some candy in there too. I loved those special brown bags. The days I want that special brown bag I go to Guerra's. Tuna on Dutch bread, meat loaf on sourdough, turkey with cranberries I love them all. Then the slightly big bag of Kettle chips in Honey Dijon and a cold can of Orangina. Oh and throw in that dark chocolate brownie for good measure. My grown up field trip bag from Guerra's brings me back to happy times.

New Year's Eve is amateur night at the bars and San Francisco is a city full of amateurs. (In other words, we didn't want to spend $300 a head on drinks). To that end, we decided to cook dinner and home, get drunk there, and generally chill out. I live in the neighborhood, and decided to give this place a chance. My buddy and I walked in there and their standing rib roasts (i.e. prime rib) looked good. We told the man behind the coutner that we were looking to feed about 5-6 people, and he even cut a few steaks off of one of the large roasts for us- that way we wouldn't have to buy more meat than we needed. He was very helpful- he wrote the cooking time and instructions on the butcher paper for us and said that since we were making it later in the day to not even bother putting it in the fridge. The roast turned out excellently and everyone loved it. From now on, whenever I want decent meat I'm going to go to Guerra. Their prices weren't significantly more than Safeway but the quality and service was way up there. It also sounded like you could order special cuts of meat ahead of time if you had something planned. I might do that next time there's a special occasion coming up.

normally guerra's is a 5-star experience. today i went in to get some osso buco and had a terrible experience with a VERY arrogant clerk. i guess the fact that i am young and blond makes it okay to talk down to me about a dish i have made and eaten my entire life. the fact is, my family is italian, in fact my last name is guerra, so when i ask for some string, i know what I'm doing. I'm not only offended but really disappointed.

Went into Guerra's this week feeling uninspired menu-wise. Wanted something healthy and quick to prepare. The butcher recommended the wild salmon. It looked very fresh; the flesh looked firm; and it was a bright orange color. The butcher recommended that I rub it with olive oil and bake it for 20 minutes. I followed the directions and it was perfection. I paired it with some roasted brocolini and little red potatoes. Yum! Thank you Guerra's.

Happy St. Paddy's Day! Where the color green takes on a new meaning. It becomes the symbol of Irish pride and legacy. So, if you're looking for the symbolic St. Patrick's Day meal of corned beef, Guerra has their own brined meat. You can purchase several cuts: round (the leanest cut but might be too dry to your liking after 4 hours of boiling); point cut - the tastiest and fattest and the brisket cut - the intermediary between too lean and too fat, or "The best of both worlds" according to the butcher. All for about $3.99-$4.99/lb. They've got nice butchers who will explain the cuts for you. Me? I was there for the ham shank, making a yummy green split pea soup, to go with the corned beef, of course!

I went there today.. It was great! They had everything laid out behind the glass counters and things looked fresh. The person behind the counter that helped me was really nice. I wanted to get 2 filet mignon steaks and he patiently weighed each steak for me. Then we headed over to the seafood counter to get some ahi tuna. The same person helped me, so that made me realize they're knowledgable at everything they sell. Mmm! The prices might be a bit up there but definitely worth it. The deli counter looked realllly good but I shall try next time! =) They also have a website where you can order stuff.. check it out!

I grew up here in the Sunset district and have driven past this store a lot over the years. However, I never really thought about going in until my wife and I visited from Winnipeg and asked about going in. She is usually the adventurous one and likes to "explore" things. Before they had the nice awning, it sort of looked a bit on the skanky run down side and I assumed that with a name like Guerra Meats, it must be a Hispanic place which is weird since the Sunset is mostly Asian. I figured that it would have flank The place smells really nice - no rotten meat smell, no blood on the walls, and the people were very nice. I bought a prime rib and every time we are in the city, I make sure to buy the prime rib there for our holiday meals. The butchers are knowledgeable, courteous and friendly. I've never felt as if I've been passed over and I'm short. They always have whatever I want and more. I love deli roast beef sandwhiches and I know how I like it. I've always loved eating the deli roast beef sandwhiches in the Castro deli (I don't know if it still even exists) but that was my "benchmark" for the perfect roast beef. Guerra has it. They put lots of beef and the bread (sourdough) is perfect. You also can't beat the price for the quality of meat. Who would ever go to Subways if you have this place to go? I'd go there everyday if I could but alas, I live in Winnipeg where they USED to have at least one good roast beef source but now no more. What's even nicer is that they also have some nice produce - butternut squash, avocados, and fancier things. I just bought the chicken sausage but haven't tried it yet. Will do and try to give an updated review. It is indeed the best butcher shop particularly in the Sunset. I wish I had known about this place when I lived here. I guess it is for the better since I'd be broke since I'd go here ALL the time.

Yay!! I finally found a local place that has quality meats, a decent selection of cheeses, wine, some grocery items, good bread, and is cheap! I went there last week and picked up 2 of there sausages (them make them there), one of "grandma's" meatballs, a small marinara sauce, a small meat sauce, and some EXCELLENT Parmesan. My total came to $16 ( and the cheese alone was $5)! The sausages were great and the meatball was sooo good. I warmed it up in the marinara sauce and it was so tender and moist! The sauces were frozen so I needed to simmer them a while to get rid of excess liquid, but they were great ( I recommend the meat). To make things even better the guy behind the counter was awesome and so helpful! They have a huge selection of already prepared meals, including some frozen soups I'm dying to try. You can also get sandwiches there that you can order in advance and pick them up at your convenience. Loved this place and can't wait to go back and get a sandwich, or try some one of the amazing looking pieces of meat!

Finally. I finally found a killer pastrami sandwich here in San Francisco. I've been looking for one pretty much since I moved here, and I'm so happy I finally have. My girlfriend Laura got some sorta turkey sandwich too, which she said was fabulous. I think next time I go here I'd like to try some of the salads and whatnot that they have in the case there, as they too, all looked wonderful. It's unfortunate that it's way out in the outer sunset, and not closer to my work, otherwise I'm sure I'd be eating here all the time. As it stands now, I will most certainly be coming back here again soon!

Butcher shop + Italian deli: what a great combination. I ordered a roast pork sandwich; a good deal at $6. Freshly sliced pork loin, your choice of bread (I chose ciabatta), plus the following: mayo, mustard, fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle. I added jalapenos for an additional 75 cents. It was a large sandwich that exuded quality. Great tasting pork, the right bread/filling ratio, fresh ingredients, nice crunchiness and chewiness. It didn't overwhelm me though - you know how something can be technically very good but it lacks personality or that special oomph? That's what I'd say about this sandwich. The service was warm and friendly and I was pleased to see that they sell Just Desserts cupcakes (individual serving size) by the sandwich/deli counter. Great idea. The deli salads looked really good and they also sell their own pasta sauces and their homemade sausages. There's a limited selection of grocery items including some fresh produce, fresh breads, and imported Italian tuna. Guerra's is tucked away in the middle of a dull stretch of Taraval east of 19th Avenue (past Safeway). Guerra's isn't close to much (other than the paint store) but it's worth a special trip. And you can take the L or find street parking easily. I'm impressed by their website which offers online ordering and suggestions for speedy dinners (good to go section). They're thoughtful and helpful. Check out the recipes, online newsletter, specials and more.

OK I started going to Guerra's when a pork roast I bought at safeway made the house smell like S____. It made my kid cry....... What a find. Guerra's is one of the best places to go for meat. Excellent products at reasonable prices. Friendly service (despite what some other yelpers think). They also have a nice selection of deli goodies. You can preorder items to assemble at home for a quick dinner.

I've been in this place so many times, the meat is good, the service is a joke. I thought I was the only one, turns out my neighbor stopped shopping there a while ago. She said the same thing I did, "They really don't care what you think, only going to help you if they feel like it. The grey haired guy with the glasses was so snotty to this poor women who was just asking him some question's about poultry. If he spoke to me like that I would have given him the bird. The people that give the good reviews are the ones they pick and choose to be nice to. There is an merchant saying, "You are only as good as your last sale" in this case "your last review". I shop at Bryan's Meat's now, better selection, too.

so much more than just a sandwich shop. Guerra's is THE place to go if you are a procrastinating prima donna, holding off till 2 days before turkey day to locate and purchase a succulent rib roast. at $10/lb. (which is about the same as anywhere else), I would rather patronize these nice fellas than Andronico's or some other big store. AND the sweet guy will even tell you how to make it perfectly medium rare. ha ha ! I found me a regular butcher in this modern day and age. I can't wait 'til December, when I decide to hunt for a beautiful roast for Christmas Eve on Christmas Eve Eve. I know Guerra's will be ready for me

This Tuesday was my first time at Guerra's. I was looking for a good quality frying chicken for a blanquette stew. My father really hates the mushy, flavorless Foster Farms chickens that most grocery stores sell, so I decided to seek out a real butcher shop. The Fulton Valley chicken had good flavor, and although it was more expensive than Foster Farm's, it was comparable to the prices of the prized Loong Kong chickens in Chinatown. The store was also very clean (no rotten smells like some meat markets) and had a good selection of both meats and Italian products (De Cecco dried pastas). I am definitely going back again. I was a bit unsure about visiting Guerra's after reading a few complaints about customer service. I went only because it was close to my house. I do have to say, however, that I was not harassed or discriminated against due to my race (I'm Chinese), but I will let you all know if that happens.

Usually, I go to George's Zoo for my afternoon sandwiches, but after reading the reviews, I decided to venture a little further from my safety zone and head to Guerra. I had the Monday sandwich special, which was packed with at least 4 different cuts of Italian meats on a rustic sourdough bread. It was pretty damn good. The dude that made my sandwich was pretty cool and even gave a huge side of yellow pepper and jalapeos on the side. The red potato salad wasn't all that good either and their choice of chips is very limited, only the kettle chips, which always cuts me inside the top of my mouth, you know what I'm talking about.

Guerra Quality Meats is the best, affordable, SF antidote (except vegetarianism, perhaps) to a food culture that has to mix antibiotics with its feed just to keep its livestock alive. Guerra is like an old-fashioned butcher shop that features all-natural (including free-range options), regional poultry and beef. The latter includes a small selection of Marin Sun Farms organic grass fed beef, which I have yet to try. I can vouch personally for their chickens. Broilers, fryers, and roasters each register at around 2 bucks a pound. This is a bargain when compared with the astounding prices at a place like Bryan's in Laurel Village. Guerra also carries frozen Diestel turkeys, which can also be yours fresh in about two days.

after reading the rave reviews here, we drove over to get crab cakes. very busy, packed w/ customers and somewhat chaotic line. Asked the helpful guy at counter for crab cakes and he started to pick them out...which is when I noticed he wasn't wearing gloves and his fingers and hands had several (3-4) small red cuts. This made me uneasy but didn't want to make a fuss..so we paid for it but then decided to play safe and tossed the crab cakes. To be fair perhaps this is how butchers work and it is perfectly safe. In my limited experience I haven't seen butchers at whole foods or at the butcher shop in Bernal skip on the gloves....that doesn't imply it may have been handled safely prior to arrival across great distances. i just hope it was.

Great local butcher and deli. Meatball sandwiches on Thursdays are excellent, not as great as those from the late lamented Herb's, but damn good. Fantastic selection of homemade nitrate-free sausages and deli meats and great deviled eggs and ravioli. The butchers really know their meat and take pride in their work and the staff is friendly. I just wish they were open later and on Sundays. Highly recommended.

Great place for meat and sandwiches! I ordered a honey baked ham sandwich on sourdough with everything and it came out very well. I only wish I could have asked for a hot sandwich which would have made it perfect. (Not sure if they offer that service.) People are friendly and very helpful. The only gripe I have is that it can be kind of disorderly. I wasn't sure where the line started and people just seemed jumbled all over the place. Nevertheless, customers were really chill about it and were helped in the end.

Guerra's is a great, friendly, butcher shop! My family has been coming to Guerra's for years on end, and will continue to do so. We've never been anything other than supremely satisfied with the service and quality of meat. On the deli end, I always remember my mom taking me to Guerra's for a sandwich after football practice, which made my day many a time. Is it cheap? No. But you get what you pay for. If you want a $5 dollar sandwich, go to Safeway where a kid will slap some lunch meat on a roll and send you on your merry way. If you want a quality, filling, and tasty sandwich, go to Guerra's! As for Shinny's complaint regarding sanitation, Katherine is spot on! Trust me on this one, she knows what she's talking about.

This is a great place! The butchers are very helpful and have never given me wrong advice. The sandwiches are really good and cheap, starting at $5 and you get a ton. The only complaint I have is that they put too much meat on their sandwiches.

This sweet local deli is just a mere three blocks from my house. It has the best sandwiches! My favorites are the turkey sandwich and the prosciutto sandwich. Their staff is also very helpful and friendly. At the side of the store, they have a nasty fan that blows out air that smells like meat. I had to walk by this meat-smelling fan everyday for many years. Does anyone else remember this fan?

I live just a few blocks from Guerra, and I used to go there a lot more often. The fact is, Guerra's meat is nothing special. In fact, a lot of the time the steaks from Safeway are better. I would never buy beef at Guerra after trying for 6 months to give them a chance. It's just not very good. What is good about Guerra? Not the prepared food either. It's pretty bland and dull, even though it looks great. This includes the sandwiches which tend to be too big too eat, and have waay too much bread. Ce la vie. Now, what IS good about Guerra? The other meat. They have a fantastic selection of lamb, and it's always cheap. Way cheaper for a rack of lamb at Guerra than Safeway, and the quality is just as good. They also have a good selection of Veal often times, which may or may not mean much to anyone but me. Their fish selection, though better than Safeway, is pretty pricey. For all I know, it may be worth it. I just don't eat much salmon, and for other fish I like going to a fish market. So if you need lamb or veal and have nowhere else to go, try Guerra. I'm sure there are other meat markets in the city to get good, cheap lamb or veal. But Guerra's close so I go to them. But most of their sales are going to be beef, and the beef just isn't that good. I gave it 3 stars because of the lamb and veal and also because you can get perfectly good deli meat here, including some fun ones not at the grocery store like soppresata, good prosciutto, coppa, etc.

Guerra's is the place to go for meat products! It is a quality butcher shop. I get my Thanksgiving turkey there every year and it is beautiful! The meat is always fresh and the staff is helpful and friendly. There is a nice selection and I never have trouble finding a parking space. If you have a special occasion or you want to have a very nice quality dinner go here for your meat. I don't think you can beat it! much better than grocery store fare!

They make good sandwiches! They slice the meat when you order it, so it's fresh! Very friendly staff. I haven't been eating sandwiches lately, but I'm sure I'll drop by this summer when I'm unsure of what to eat for lunch.

Fantastic. These guys know their meat. I always get helped immediately -- no numbers to pull like the grocery store. They'll prep your meat for you too. If you need your whole chicken splayed out flat for grilling it's no problem here. I even got marinade recommendations for my ridiculously size rib-eye steak. Make sure you don't leave without some Italian Salami sliced thin. The guy helping me sliced it so thin I could see through it. I haven't found any other place willing (or able) to do this. Oh yeah, the house made sausages are good too, especially the little breakfast links.

This is the best place in the Sunset/Parkside for meat. The butchers are real old time meat guys who can help you with suggestions on cooking approaches. The meat is not cheap, but you really can't wrong with the various cuts of beef there. When Fairlane Market on Vicente closed some years ago, I remember feeling sad that the awesome meat market there would be missed. I walked into Guerra's and most of the old butchers were there!

A gem in the rough! I stopped in to pick up some sausages for a dinner get together after reading all of the rave reviews on Yelp. The Garlic and Artichoke chicken sausages and Cajun chicken sausages were excellent! They were fresh and full of flavor. I also purchased a beautiful piece of salmon belly which I'll have tomorrow for dinner. Even though they were closing in 10 minutes and packing up for the day, our employee was extremely kind and patient describing to me a little bit about all of the different kinds of fish they had. This assisted me with my decision on what type of fish I should purchase. Pros: 1) Fresh, beautiful, and great quality food 2) Friendly and warm staff 3) Easy street parking 4) Yummy chicken sausages Cons: 1) NONE! I will not purchase anymore meat from a supermarket again! Only the best from Guerra's. =)

Seriously the loveliest meat counter I have ever witnessed, seafood, Lamb, rabbit, veal, prepared pre seasoned meats, poultry including goose. We grilled a 10 lb Chateau Briand and the butcher wanted to make sure it come out well and advised in indirect heat and timing. It was awesome. The sandwiches are healthy and tasty. Seriously top notch service, funny and friendly staff. I want to try their Pasta and sauces next. Oh and they have veggies and fruit, pretty much anything you need for your meal. I like Lucca and Molanari's like the next person, but this place is so much more in my opinion. I have lived in the area for more than 3 years and have just recently found this treasure. I will be back.

Our "local" butcher. Absolutely wonderful range of fresh meats. The staff are super efficient. Why do we love this place? You go in asking for some European style cut of something and they do their best to sort it out for you. Master craftsmen coupled with excellent produce. A special butchers shop. Goose, ox-tails, ham shanks, grass fed beef, prime lamb - the stuff that taste is made of.

Hey, a Jewish girl like me knows a thing or two about family, and when you go to Guerra Meats you're not just getting quality meat, you're getting the best family service. Fresh meat, cut well, a variety or Italian imports, and a family style type welcome. No matter where you live in the city, Guerra Meats is worth the trip!

In the battle between the mega grocery chain stores and the mom and pop hole-in-the walls, Guerra's wins hands down in every category: quality, service, and freshness. Family-owned and operated for something like 50 years, Guerra's carries not only high quality meats but also homemade broths, ravioli, fresh fish, vegetables and roasted rotisserie Chicken. Included in the market is a full service deli, with cold cut turkey and roast beef made in store. There is a full selection of Cheeses, a variety of cold cuts, and if you want to eat it here and now, the deli serves the best sandwices on Taravel. While more pricey than your average safeway, the quality of the product, friendliness and knowledge of the owners makes it more than worth it.

This place is the real deal... They have excellent cuts and a knowledgable staff who offer recommendations and cooking instructions specific to what I'm buying. They've been around around since the mid-1950's, so they are obviously doing something right. Do yourself a favor...go in and take a look around. Buy something and you'll be hooked for good. It's a bit pricey, but it's worth it...trust me.

Excellent neighborhood butcher shop/deli. Quality: Extremely high. Whether you're buying meat or fish, or some of the prepared dishes, everything is exactly as you'd expect -- fresh and delicious. This is where I buy all my holiday special meats (e.g. standing rib roast for Christmas). I wouldn't trust anyone else more to make sure that my holiday meals suffer from low quality. Plus they sell precooked dishes, whether salads or meat. Everything is prepared on premise. I don't think I would eat hamburger except for the meat they grind on site. Plus they make great fresh sandwiches -- a very typical destination for me on weekends. Service: Excellent. Friendly and efficient. They act like friendly neighbors because that is what they are. If you want advice about how to prepare some meat or fish, they always have helpful tips. Prices: Excellent. No it's not real cheap but you get what you pay for. Certainly they hold their own against supermarket pricing, which can be crazy in San Francisco. Summary: If you're in the neighborhood how could you not know about Guerra's? If you're not, the only reason you shouldn't come is because I don't want to wait in line behind you :).

This place is pretty good. I haven't bought meat from them, only samiches. They were commendable sandwhiches yes, but they didn't have anything that was truely theres. The dude at the counter was chill. Something about not having an id with a credit card, couldn't tell you the specefics as it was a while ago, but then again im pretty sure you dont give a fuck anyway, right. If you live close its a good choice.

A REAL Butcher Shop. Real carcases hanging on hooks, MEN (and even a woman or 2) who know what they are doing behind the glass cases. ...and the meat! If you are a protein addict, THISISTHEPLACE! Any cut you want, skillfully delivered ("you want that wrapped for the fridge or freezer?") Need cooking advice? Just ask. They also stock stock. Homemade veal, chicken, fish, beef, veggie base. A small selection of fresh veggies, breads & cheeses as well as staples such as pasta, olives, spices and asst Italian goodies. Then there's the DELI case, more meat & Cheese sliced to order, sandwiches made to order and prepared salads. Don't leave without a deviled egg...

Real butchers, real, fresh meat and poultry, and real, yes real deli sandwiches...this place is the real deal and family owned for over 50 years. Have been many times in 20 years and have never experienced a cross or "over it" employee. Now, if only they could spell potato correctly on their "potatoe salad" they'd be perfection. But they're close!

Meat Heaven! Is what I said the first time I walked into Guerrea's. And Im not just talking about the culinary kind. A few of the guys are nice pieces of flesh! I really like the quality of the meat here, its always been excellent and the stuffed eggs are killer. My current favorite is the Sockeye Salmon. Sweet, fresh, and melts in your mouth!

Oh i love this place! I don't go as often as I'd like to, but when I do, I'm always satisfied. I love the tuna salad. It's so good and it's not swimming in mayo. I don't know what they put in it, but it's good enough to eat on its own, maybe with some crackers. Their caprese salad's super tasty too. I normally get it with the tuna salad and some of their deli meats. They have a nice selection of poultry and meats. I bought this beef thing that had tomato, mozzarella and basil stuffed inside. Boy it was good. And because I'm not very good in the kitchen, the guy behind the counter wrote down what temperature to cook the meat and and for how long. I would definitely get it again. The folks are always nice and you know what you're getting is fresh. Beats going to Safeway!

As a young tyke, my best friend's mom made the best swedish meatballs with meat from this place. My dad used to go here to buy sausages (they have some of THE BEST fresh sausages in the city), and now I come here for my ground beef when making homemade hamburgers. The service is great, fast, and friendly. The location is good: if you live in the Sunset, you MUST come here for your meats. I've known Guerra Meats for practically my whole life. There's always a story for this place because it has such a family neighborhood feel. The meat selection is pretty tremendous, the quality top notch, and the prices are higher than grocery stores, but WELL WORTH IT. Oh yea... they do Holiday Meats like Turkey for all you lazy cooks out there.

I've been here many times because i live just around the corner, but if this place was on the other side of the city, i would still make the trip. I have never gotten a bad piece of meat and their advice is always accurate. Make the trip. It's worth your time.

The recovering vegan in me would roll over in her grave if she knew how much I adore this little store. A nice selection of wild-caught fish and organic meats, plus neat stuff like risotto mixes, pre-made broths, and little Italian candies my dad remembers from childhood. Sandwiches are yummy, and so are the delicious stuffed eggs. The best part is the people who work here. The service never ceases to surprise and delight me. The people here are so friendly and so patient when I ask for all kinds of weird things, and are always happy to make suggestions for cooking and storage. I'm so glad I have Guerra's to walk to, when Safeway's hormone-laden meats and fake food are my other neighborhood alternative.

happy days! a charming, well stocked, old fashioned, european style butcher's shop that's in my neighborhood! customer service is excellent, a friendly butcher helped me out right away, and even introduced himself as the owner :) ultra fresh, high quality meats, many made in house, like their sausages...have you ever noticed the craftsmanship of a sausage? i certainly hadn't until i got home and unwrapped the little beauties. very impressed with the freshness and overall quality of everything i bought today, and prices are so reasonable. can't believe that i never knew this a gem of a place was in my neighborhood all along, but so glad i found it today...

Okay, I don't like to pick people out but I think by addressing Shinny's comment I can help clear up a very common misunderstanding with food service. Clearly Shinny has never worked in food service or at least in food service with proper food safely training, because if she had, she would know that plastic gloves provide no added protection in food safety. If someone preparing food uses their hands to prepare food, which i guarantee ALL cooks do in restaurants, and simply washes them continually, they are just as safe as wearing gloves. Food safety training by the state of California clearly states that gloves are just used to ease the concerns of customers. They are a waste of money and an increase in waste, but people feel better when they see them because they don't realize that they add not extra protection. I'm really sick of people freaking out whenever they don't see gloves- they're not needed!!! Let me just say that if you go in to Guerra's and ask for their most current score from the Department of Health's inspection you would find out that they got 100%!!!!

Nice selection of different cuts of lamb [which is nice as Safeway and Whole Foods have proved very subpar in the lamb options], lots of beef selections also that seemed reasonably priced. Got to love a place that makes it possible to have more lamb based dishes.

This place is awesome. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I usually stop in here to get meat for cheesesteak sandwiches and they'll slice it up very thin for me. I'm also really fond of their deviled eggs. They are the best deviled eggs I've ever had.

Simply the Best meats with super service. Great meats and specialties that you don't get anywhere else. The Lamb Topini is super. When I asked how to prepare it, they even had a handout on how to cook it. They have some sauces such as the Spicy Garlic BBQ sauce which is my favorite. Like others have said, you don't get this at Safeway.

After Thursday class at nearby Parkside Pilates, I always run over to Guerra to get a sandwich. My favorites are Roast Beef and Cheddar or Prosciutto and Swiss, on wheat with mustard. I think the service is fantastic - the place is always buzzing at lunch and they have 3 or 4 people taking orders. I miss East Coast delis and my beloved Italian store in VA. This is the closest I've found in San Francisco.

Came here on a weekend for prosciutto. They don't have prosciutto. They have prosciutto...di parma. I automatically ask for a pound. The guy helping me scrutinizes the case, gives the end piece on hand a sad look, and says he'll open a new one for me. He does this in front of me, and test slices the meat to get the goods as thin as possible, per my request. A few minutes and about $22 later, I'm walking out into the sunshine with bougie looking packages holding primo gold. No complaints, I'll be back to let you guys take my money!

So! Who doesn't have days when we just can't cope in the kitchen? It happens, even to me. There are those days, you know them - its when you can't manage more than to open a bottle of wine (you are in even more luck, the SF Wine Trading Co is 2 blocks away!) that I call Guerra's and reserve one of their rotisserie chickens. They roast Mary's chickens to perfection. They are juicy. They are NEVER dry! EVER! They are not salty. There are no strange sauces . . .just chicken and a light salt/pepper seasoning and you get succulent goodness without doing more than driving over there and back. And parking is fairly easy. You'll want to call them first. They sell out quickly especially on the weekend or at the dinner hour. They'll hold one for you. They'll also tell you when more will be ready. You can also get a half chicken. Other markets in town have them, but these are the best, so if Taraval is a bit far for you, go anyway. You will thank me. Since 95% of my meat comes from grass fed ranchers who I know personally I can't fairly say anything about their meat, but I know that people love this shop.

Guerra just looks gourmet on that corner block of 15th and Taraval. It's a tiny grocer with all the novelty goodies inside in addition to the extensive selection of bourgeois meats. One of my projects were in the area, and I made it a point to satiate my sandwich cravings here when possible. I had the Roma which is a turkey pesto sandwich one day and fell in love. It comes with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mustard (not for me) and your choice of bread. Another day, I wanted to branch out and try the chicken salad sandwich, but they ran out. So I never got to try that sandwich but no worries, back to the Roma. It was a good day! I'll make a point to grab some sandwiches here if I'm in the area again!

So my mom goes to get some scallops here and spend 48. bucks for a family of 4. It's for my special dinner for the 5th of July birthday. So, I bite into one and my mouth burns and I smell a strong odor of ammonia. My mom is arguing that these are fresh and there's nothing wrong with them. Was she wrong, we couldn't finish the food but I ate the most to make her happy and was sick all day Monday. Come to find out, since this has never happened to me, that they were going bad. The entire house stunk after 12 hours. I'm not sure how such a high end shop could sell spoiled seafood but it was the worst dinner I have ever had and it ruined out party. I will never buy here and make sure you tell you friends not to buy seafood here.

This place is a fantastic neighborhood staple. It's a deli / butcher with a tiny corner dedicated to organic produce and eggs. They also have a few shelves dedicated to pantry items like beautiful Italian pastas, olive oils, crackers and cookies. But that's not why you go here: you go here for the meats! They usually have about 10-12 people working the counters (seriously!) so I've never waited longer than 10 seconds before someone asks how they can help me -- even when it's super crowded. Everyone is super knowledgeable so it's fun to ask for their recommendations. We have gotten their T-bone a few times which is our favorite. I swear, you could cook that thing until it was gray and it would still taste unbelievable (we cook it Medium Rare, of course, but you know what I mean ;) All their meats are antibiotic free and free range. They do great marinades and we've gotten the Korean short ribs marinated in apricot and the teriyaki chicken thighs. Their pork chops are incredible, too. Basically, any meats you get there will be beautiful and excellently butchered. I have yet to get a sandwich or cold cuts, but there's always a long line and their cold salads and antipastos look fantastic. They also have a freezer with homemade stocks and ready made meals like lasagna for you to take home and bake. It's unlikely you'll leave without paying a good chunk of money, but IMO it's not only worth it to support great, local businesses like this but also the farms that they buy from that are raising animals and produce sustainably and organically.

I refuse to get meats anywhere else. So far I've only tried their short ribs and chicken fajitas and I'm hooked. I didn't have very high hopes for the chicken since it didn't look very well seasoned but it was flavorful without being overly salted. I've never had such amazing short ribs either. The guy said it was going to be tender and I was still surprised when I bit into it. I didn't enjoy the toscano sandwich as much but I liked their sourdough. The sandwich as a whole was saltier than I'm used to so I think I'll stick with my regular place for that.

It's always crowded every time I come in, but I guess it's just cause you can't beat the quality. My boyfriend and I always come in for sandwiches and I typically get the Roma since I love pesto. It's loaded with ingredients for such a low price (compared to other sandwich spots). Everyone is nice here and once you're being helped, they get you out in a timely manner. We're always happy after each visit!

I live in Noe Valley and have been going to Drewes meats since 2000. I can't believe I've not known about this sooner. This makes Drewes seem like something from East Germany during the cold war. For those who have been to Balduccis in SoHo, this is the SF version. A constant hustle of activity. Amazing meats. Foccacia from the best focacceria in SF. And to keep things moving along, they have wireless barcode scanners so they can ring you up and get you on your way in no time. I'll be making the trek now from Noe to get my meats here. Bonus points: Super easy street parking!

Amazing steaks. I wish I lived closer by. Ribeye steak was excellent. Not as big a fan of the chicken apple sausage (although the sausages are homemade). The staff there went out of their way to freezer pack individual servings of meat for me.

Sandwiches here are solid. Had a couple different kinds and even asked to try out other small samples of various meats which they'll totally let you do. It was all pretty outstanding. A little pricey so I wouldn't necessarily make this a regular stop, but really good.

With 4.5 stars, the storefront of a well-established local favorite, and tucked away in the cozy Parkside neighborhood, I came with expectations. I got one of the specialty turkey sandwiches for lunch (can't remember if it was the Milano or Roma... shows how unmemorable it was). It was alright: the first few bites were pretty satisfying because I was hungry and the meat quality is good, but after the initial excitement it started tasting like a standard cafeteria sandwich. By the time I got to the end of the sandwich in which it was cold and a bit soggy, I was paradoxically hungry--while filling, it wasn't particularly satisfying. Everything else was good: service with smiles, prompt attention, and my made-to-order sandwich ready in a reasonable time, as well as the ambiance of a beloved neighborhood store. Conclusion: In my opinion, the deli sandwiches are definitely not worth it, at a total of $9 when I can get an omnomnomalicious banh mi for less than $4 at Banhwich down the street. I also looked around the store a little while waiting for my sandwich, in search of a snack. While there were some tempting treats, I didn't get anything because everything was pricey (even when taking into account the fancy Europeanness) and rather short-dated. Maybe the meat and groceries are better. I'll leave this one up to grown-ups who actually do legit grocery shopping to set the verdict on this one, but my experience hasn't been too student-friendly in terms of to-go food, snacks, and price.

This is mainly about the sandwich. I ordered the Sicilian on dutch crunch and it wasn't very good. It's loaded with jalapeños and that basically took over the taste of the sandwich. I couldn't get past how disappointing the bread was. It was definitely not fresh. Any sandwich shop should know that if the bread is not good, the sandwich won't be either. Overall it was a disappointment. I know that there is a new law in SF about food handlers wearing gloves. Only a couple were wearing gloves, not including my sandwich maker. The 3 stars is because the place had a lot of meat options and my sandwich maker was friendly and fast. With all the options for sandwiches in the area I probably won't come back here for a sandwich but I might come back if i need meats.

Update: ok, it's a hit or miss here on whether I get any help. They should start a numbering system since there is no practical way of lining up inside. You'll know what I mean if you come here when it's crowded. ------///Stood there for a while without anyone helping me or asking if I needed help so I gave up and left. No one said hello either.

Amazing, hole-in-the-wall market that is perfect for small grocery items or picking out certain types of meats for snacks and meals. When I come to Guerra I usually just order a sandwich but the service has always been fast and personable and the sandwiches are great. They take either cash or card and the staff is very helpful and laid-back. The price is usually around the $10 mark, which is more than fair and even a bit surprising considering the great quality and taste. If I were to compare Guerra's to anything I would say Lucca's in the Marina is the closest thing. Both are great at what they do and it's no surprise that people travel out of the way to come to Guerra's.

Holy crap just had their sandwich for the first time. Warm herbed pork loin on ciabatta so damned good. House cooked meat, excellent bread. I knew this place as a fantastic butcher shop, now have yet another reason to stop by on my peninsula commute.

Guerra's Meats is fabulous - reminds me of my grandfather's butcher shop in Wisconsin. Wonderful cuts of meat presented on beds of ice. Prepared meats (marinated, cooked etc) as well. Free range and organic chickens, a decent assortment of fish, fresh meats at the deli and they make sandwiches. They grind all their meat on site - so no worries about pink slime or other additives, and have all the cuts you could want. Don't see it? They'll cut it custom for you as you wait. Prepared chicken and turkey stock (made in the store) along with a great selection of slaws and salads they make every day. And the prices are better than Safeway or Lucky's, much less Andronico's or Molly Stone. My favorites are the whole broiler chickens (Mary's free range organic) and the marbled grass fed beef. They usually have about 10 guys behind the counter who are always friendly, quick and efficient. If you get a chance to be served by Tony you're in for a special treat - he's attentive, full of suggestions and always willing to come out into the main store to help you find something from the coolers. If you live or work in San Francisco you owe yourself at least once to Guerra's to experience what a butcher's shop is supposed to be like.

We shop at Guerra's every week. Service is fantastic (except for the one guy who's hungover every Saturday and messes up even the simplest orders. We avoid him at all costs). Their meat is always fresh, they trim it as needed and are a joy to visit every Saturday.

Called ahead to order a Goose, made sure to double check that it's not frozen when I pick it up today. Picked up the meat for $124 and it was frozen solid inside. I proceeded to call them and their advise was hot water. Go to Andronico's same meat better price, much nicer service.

Metered parking on Taraval Free 2HR parking on 14th and 15th streets, between which Guerra's is located. Right across from the "L" light rail stop on 15th. This place is glorious! I've been going since August of 2010. I have friends who ask me if we get to have Guerra's sandwiches before they come to visit me in the city. Guerra's has seen me through many guests as well as many post-night-out recovery days. Yum. Aside from their sandwiches, I've also had their tri-tip, swordfish, cooked whole chicken, and their ground sirloin. I am always satisfied. They also have yummy gourmet desserts as well as veggies and dairy items. I often buy their sliced bread, too. The staff there are more than friendly and will recognize you if you come often. Prices are great. Plus, it's an adorable little place.

Folks know I am a meat man. As in prime or wonderful slabs butchered the right way. Not as in too thin as to not be able to make it correctly, leaving enough trim as to have the flavoring and the right amount of marbeling. Peeps, the leanest steak you can find is the one that taste like shoe leather. Now, some grass fed have little marble, can taste very good but that is for another day. One other thing. Did you know that almost all cattle is grass fed and the grain and other nutrients are just fed to them at the end of their cycle to increase the fat content to induce real flavor. Anyway. So, I was in this neighborhood as I was meeting a lying sack of s...t client. I had time since he was more than late to the meeting. I was thinking I could use a great steak for dinner and I was wondering if there was a butcher shop in the area. Viola and here I went. This is a old style butcher shop, with Italian specialties cooked and uncooked on one side, poultry, pork, lamb and beef. I looked at the meat selections that were well priced and I saw these prime NY Strips. Did you know that in NYC, they call that steak a sirloin or a shell steak? Anyway. I think it was the only prime they had in the shop though the choice prime rib looked amazing as did the choice porterhouses. The nice butcher, I think the main honcho asked me what I wanted. I pointed to the best they had, he agreed. Wrapped quickly, paid fast and I was out the door. I will soon return as I bet their Italian sausage will be Goodfellas worthy.

I ride half an hour out of my way just to go to this shop. I often rely on their recommendations which, to date, have been terrific. These include: * flatiron steak (recommended to me instead of the pricier flank or hanger.) * Santa Fe chicken sausage. (All the sausages are good, but this might be my favorite.) * Toscano Sandwich. (Good lord. Possibly my favorite cold sandwich in the city.) You can't go wrong here. You just can't.

Quality butchers that really know their stuff. I love their prosciutto. You can get specialties such as bone marrow, sweet breads, lox, so many goodies. I just wish they offered more organic variety. We also come here for their organic chicken and I take them up on their offer to break down the chicken as I'm too lazy to do it myself. I ask them to keep the bones so I can use them to make broth as well. Otherwise very solid meat selections.

I was estimated and given 9 bone rib roast for 10 people. Waaaay too much meat. $10.99 / lb, 15.29 pounds. You can do the math, I don't want to think about it even though it was somewhat worth it. Honestly, I should have gotten just a 4 or 5 bone rib roast. The general rule is 1-2 persons per bone. I knew the rule, I should have went with it. I blame myself there. At least my dad was really happy eating prime rib for days. The meat was pretty decent quality, but not better than my old butcher (I miss you). It had a little too much fat. I haven't done anything else here but they'll do since my butcher is gone.

I grew up in the Noe Valley and we used to go to Drew's meats on church which I still love. When moving to Parkside/Sunset after getting married I had to find a butcher. From the first time I walked into Guerra's I got a warm family feel. They were very welcoming and patient. If you don't see something, ask. They are very accommodating. When driving home from work I always see construction and city worker getting their sandwiches from Guerra. I've yet to have one but they look and smell amazing. They have everything from cold cuts, GIANT tiger shrimp, rib eye, veal, lamb, pork loin, I could go on, and on. They won my heart over when I came in one day to get ingredients to make my Sunday gravy (sauce) which consist of 4 different types of meat. I've gone to other butcher shops and they are always short one ingredient. Guerra's had them all!!! They will also cut and cut of meat to your liking. I wish I had an extra thumb to give em 3 thumbs up. I'm so glad I moved out here and stumbled upon Guerra's!

Outstanding quality and verity of meats! I love it!!! They always have veal in stock! Home made rich stock n ready made Bolognese! Duck fat! They will order custom item for you just call in advance. Really fantastic local business. 5 stars all the way.

I don't live in the neighborhood. In fact, I live all the way over that hill known as Twin Peaks so I might be a little biased. Great neighborhood place, probably not worth traveling too far. I was on a bike ride around the city and decided to finally stop by Guerra Quality Meats to grab a sandwich for my hike the next day. The shop is tiny with the butcher in the back and the deli counter to the left. It's not swamped so there's no number system. Just walk up and someone will help you. I got the Toscano sandwich (salami, mild coppa, provolone and pepperoncini) with mustard and mayo on a soft roll (as recommended) for $8. In the meantime I was starving after my ride so got a deviled egg for $1.50. The deviled egg was okay-good. You get the entire egg which is nice. But I prefer my whites to be softer and less rubbery. Still, a good hit of protein after cycling 15 miles. The sandwich was still the same the next day. Didn't look harmed by the storage time. It was again and okay-good sandwich. I still prefer the sandwiches at my local Bi-Rite. It's a decent sandwich but more in the old school style instead of the new gourmet ingredients / fanciful combinations / strong flavors thing that's going on. Service at Guerra is excellent. Super friendly patient people.

This has to be one of the best deli and meat markets in the city. Hands down the best meat, chicken and deli. Try the eggs from local farms in Petaluma. All the butchers are pros.

It's in the name. Quality. Great examples of what customer service should be like on every level. Yesterday, I called in an order and I asked Matt, "why should I come to you to get my meat instead of somewhere else?" His thoughtful response demonstrated that he was actively listening to me and sold me. When I got to the store, I was greeted by Tony with warmth and hospitality as if I was being invited as a guest in his home. Not only did he take care of me, I overheard him taking care of someone who was new to the store. He listened carefully to this customer, gave suggestions on how to prepare the meat, even asked if they had any questions about what they were buying and, they were impressed as was I. I was so impressed, that I made sure to call to give a compliment directly to Tony and Max in the afternoon. This is a great place. it's a neighborhood gem. You'll get what you pay for not only in the quality of the meat but also in the quality of the service.

awesome place with almost all helpful and great guys. The only one that always seems to almost be hostile is the asian guy strangely enough. Not sure why he's never patient nor helpful or sometimes condescending. But, luckily their product and every other guy there is lovely and helpful.

A claustrophobic's nightmare lol. I loved the food here and service was okay but it is VERY small with isles barely capable of two people passing by one another in. The folks I encountered who happen to be customers were very rude and acted as if I was in their way on purpose LOL.. I was helped very promptly by the people who worked there so that was great cause I just wanted to get my delicious goodies and get out of there. I would for sure go back, but will keep in mine that I will have to "think thin" when trying to maneuver about in the store. Prices were very good for the quality and I loved everything I purchased there. 4 solid stars.

Sandwiches are pretty good. Been here on a few occasions so it's safe to say: stay away from the deviled eggs and side salads. They are not fresh. I hate to say it but I also hate buying deviled eggs and potato salad that are moldy. Wish they would regulate their pre-packaged items better. Service is hit or miss. Happy they carry Marin Sun Farms products though they're kinda overpriced.

Who woulda thought quality meats make for great sandwiches? For a pretty penny, you could find yourself with one of these sandwiches. I've been here twice and both times, I came out pleased with my orders. Yesterday, I ordered a turkey sandwich with mayo & all the veggies except for onions. The ingredients were fresh and the turkey tasted juicy-- like the perfectly cooked turkey your mom makes on Thanksgiving. I would HIGHLY recommend coming if you find yourself with a sudden craving for meaty sandwiches.
